Inmate dies after medical emergency

State Journal Staff Report Published:

A Frankfort man died following a medical emergency at Fayette County Detention Center while serving time for driving under the influence of alcohol, according to Fayette County officials.

Jeffery M. McKinney, 37, died around 7:30 p.m. at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital Tuesday after the emergency at the county jail, according to the coroner’s office.

He began his 14-day sentence May 17, according to jail spokeswoman Sgt. Jennifer Taylor.

Lexington Police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts says the department is investigating the death and will move forward after the cause of death is released.

The coroner’s office says the cause of death is pending and will be released once an autopsy is complete, Roberts said.

The State Journal reported McKinney was in a wreck on Bald Knob Road in December 2011. He walked away after his Ford F-350 flipped when he crossed the centerline and hit an embankment. After the wreck his family said he suffers from periodic seizures.
