Storm downs State Journal website
A severe thunderstorm in Alliance, Ohio, shut down The State Journal’s website Tuesday afternoon, according Dix Communications, the parent company of the newspaper.
The storm blew a power transformer, shutting down The State Journal’s website and others in the newspaper chain. Transformer and server repairs kept the website dark for more than four hours. The State Journal’s website is back online.
Work training available for jobless vets
Unemployed veterans may qualify for up to 12 months of job training through the new Veterans Retraining Assistance Program. The program, which is being offered through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Labor, starts July 1.
To qualify, a veteran must be 35-60 years old, be unemployed, not be dishonorably discharged, not be eligible for any other VA education benefit program, not be in receipt of VA compensation for unemployment and not be enrolled in a federal or state job training program.
Participants also must be enrolled in an education program approved for VA benefits at a community college or technical school, and the program must lead to an associate degree, non-college degree or a certificate, and provide training towards a high-demand occupation
Participants may receive up to 12 months of assistance equal to the monthly full-time payment rate under the Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty program, which is currently $1,473 a month.

Historic grants available
The Franklin County Trust for Historic Preservation is accepting applications for grants to assist with historic preservation projects.

Commissioners to discuss city budget tonight
The City Commission will meet at 5:30 p.m. tonight for a special meeting to discuss the 2012-2013 fiscal year budget. The commissioners must agree on a plan to eliminate a $1.2 million deficit before passing the budget in June.
Crime seminar June 12
Farmers Bank Community Center will host a seminar on crime-related issues and crime prevention June 12 at 6:30 p.m.
A.J. Gwyn, a retired police investigator from Atlanta and nationally recognized expert on crime prevention, will speak.
