SFNA HOSTS QUARTERLY MEETING, DINNER
The South Frankfort Neighborhood Association will host its quarterly meeting tonight at the South Frankfort Presbyterian Church. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for a social hour with dinner. Donations for dinner will be accepted to go in a memorial fund for a community tribute for Bruce Cassidy.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and a representative from the Access Soup Kitchen will provide an update on the shelter. SFNA will also hear from a representative from the Frankfort Sewer Department, who will explain an upcoming sewer project that will affect Louisville Hill, Taylor Avenue and parts of Second Street. Other items on the agenda include committee reports and the election of officers for the 2012-2013 term. SFNA will be collecting non-perishable goods at the meeting to present to the Soup Kitchen.

ONE-DAY VBS CANCELED
The one-day Vacation Bible School planned for Saturday at the West Frankfort Church of God, Louisville Road, has been canceled.
WINE TASTING WILL BENEFIT COUNCIL ON FAMILY ABUSE
Capital Cellars is hosting a complimentary wine tasting to support the Franklin County Council on Family Abuse 4:30-7:30 p.m. Friday. The event will have a blues theme in anticipation of the Capital City Blues & River Festival, scheduled for Aug. 11.
Proceeds and tips from the wine tasting will support the council, which serves the needs of domestic violence and raises awareness of domestic violence and elder and child abuse in the community. Tickets for the blues festival will be available at the tasting for $20.
BESHEAR MAKES HIGHER EDUCATION APPOINTMENTS
Gov. Steve Beshear has appointed Ekumene Lysonge to the Kentucky State University Board of Regents for a six-year term ending June 30, 2018.
The governor’s office announced various appointments to university and higher education boards Wednesday.
Lysonge, a Louisville attorney, is vice president of Churchill Downs Inc., and he replaces Laura Douglas, whose term has expired.
Also Wednesday, Beshear appointed David Allen, of Frankfort, to the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority for a four-year term expiring July 15, 2016. Allen is as an executive assistant in the Department for Local Government and a temporary paraprofessional for the University of Kentucky, according to online personnel records.
FISCAL COURT MEETING FRIDAY
Fiscal Court meets Friday at 9 a.m. for a work session followed by a 10 a.m. meeting at 321 W. Main St. Both sessions are open to the public. Agenda items include authorization to approve equipment for Constable Richard Sandifer and new pickup trucks for the Road Department.
The court will also vote on raising the 2012 rate for real property taxes. The current rate is $1.57 for every $1,000, and the state Department of Local Government has recommended a compensating rate of $1.65.
MEDICATION DISPOSAL DAY AUG. 4
The Frankfort Police Department and Franklin County Health Department, in cooperation with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, will host a Medication Disposal Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 4 at the health department, 851 East-West Connector Road.
All expired, unneeded or unused medications are welcome, according to a press release from Frankfort police.
Uniformed officers and health department personnel will oversee the collection process to insure the medications are disposed in a safe, legal and environmentally conscious manner, the news release says.
Individuals who drop off their drugs will be given window clings to display at their homes to indicate they have disposed of their medications.
No radioactive materials, chemotherapy medications, needles or sharp instruments will be accepted.
