Teen pleads not guilty in shooting death

Defender asks judge to reduce 19-year-old's $500,000 bond

The teen who has been charged with the murder of a local 16-year-old boy pleaded not guilty today in Franklin Circuit Court.

Carstaigo Fields, 19, of Frankfort, wore a protective vest before Franklin Circuit Judge Phillip Shepherd for his arraignment on charges stemming from the early morning murder at Austin Park Apartments on Bypass Plaza Drive.

Fields allegedly shot Jafari Hart six times with a .45 semi-automatic handgun before running him over with a vehicle around 1:30 a.m. Monday, Commonwealth’s Attorney Larry Cleveland said after he was indicted Wednesday.

Hart and Fields – who police say were acquaintances – most likely arrived at the apartment building together, Cleveland said. One other person was with Fields at the time of the shooting.

Hart and Fields got into a dispute, but officials are unsure why the argument began, Cleveland said.

Public defender Kristin Gonzalez stood in for Fields’ arraignment, but will not be his permanent counsel. She requested the judge consider a bond reduction. Cleveland opposed the motion.

Fields is held on a $500,000 bond at Franklin County Regional Jail.
