Sam Simpson, 10, of Frankfort, holds his check of $1,000 for a college savings account after he was randomly selected to receive the money from the more than 5,000 families around Kentucky who submitted entries for the Kentucky Education Savings Plan Trust and the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives THINK BIG Save for College 2012 Summer Reading Program during a ceremony at the Capitol rotunda Monday. (Hannah Reel/hreel@state-journal.com) Paul Sawyier Public Library youth services coordinator Erinn Conness has a photo taken with Madeline Abramson, wife of Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson, after accepting a check of $500 on behalf of the library. Abramson presented Sam his check, along with seven other children from around Kentucky. Each winner’s library also received $500. The program is aimed at encouraging children to read throughout the summer. More than 100,000 children participate each year.
