Woman apparently dies from own crossbow shot

State Journal Staff Report Published:

A Floyd County woman was found dead after she apparently shot herself with a crossbow during an Owen County hunting trip Sunday, state police say.

Yvetta Reffitt, 59, of Martin, was dropped off on an Owen County farm to hunt by herself around 6:45 a.m., according to Kentucky State Police.

When she didn’t return for lunch, her hunting group started a search and found her body around 11:30 a.m., police say.

“Preliminary investigation points to the crossbow shot, along with pre-existing medical conditions, as the causes of Ms. Reffitt’s death,” a KSP news release says.

KSP Detective Kurt Buhts is leading the ongoing investigation, and he was assisted at the scene by the Owen County Sheriff’s Office, Owen County EMS, Owen County Rescue and the Monterey Fire Department, the release says.
