Man who killed UK football player hurt in accident

The Associated Press Published:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A man who pleaded guilty in the 1994 slaying of a University of Kentucky football player has been seriously injured in an auto accident, authorities said Sunday.

The Courier-Journal of Louisville reports that Frankfort native Shane Ragland was hurt Saturday afternoon in an accident that shut down part of the Snyder Freeway. Louisville police say Ragland was traveling on a freeway ramp to eastbound Interstate 64 when he lost control of his Dodge Durango and it struck a guardrail.

Louisville police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley said Ragland was ejected and the Durango came to rest on its roof. He wasn't wearing a seatbelt.

Police said Ragland was taken to University Hospital and was in serious condition Sunday. No drugs or alcohol are suspected in the crash.

A jury convicted Ragland of murder and sentenced him to 30 years in prison in the shooting death of football player Trent DiGiuro, but his conviction was thrown out in 2002 after it was learned that an FBI analyst lied during a pretrial conference. Prosecutors had argued Ragland shot DiGiuro because he thought the player was responsible for blackballing him from a UK fraternity.

Ragland later pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to time served plus three days. In a civil wrongful-death case, he was ordered to pay $63.4 million to DiGiuro's family.

  • dailyvowelmovement: The SJ didn't lock ANY of the articles on Richie Farmer over the past year. Interesting indeed to observe what they leave open for viewing. Richie Farmer and Shane Ragland. -------------- On another note, love your name.

  • Interesting to see that the SJ locks just about every article except for the one that involves the son of local millionaire convicted of murder.....

  • Prayer is not necessary. Don't worry, his Dad will cover it if the insurance doesn't. He is used to bailing his son out.

  • I hope he has auto insurance- he hit our SUV and so far we have had absolutely no help from the Louisville Metro police. The officer who took our statement never answered any of our questions and we are having problems with the inaccuracies in the police report. We live in North Carolina we were not familiar with this person- but we helped him while we waited for first responders to arrive. We prayed for him and we are glad he survived. He was driving very recklessly and came speeding down that on ramp. With 5 DUIs on his record I am shocked they did not test for drugs and alcohol. Please pray we get our damage covered.

  • John Doe, "Something tells me if Trent Diguirro had been killed with a butcher knife instead of a GUN then there would have been a completely different discussion." ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Something tells me that if Shane had gone after Trent with a butcher knife, Trent would have made him eat it, which is why the weapon of choice was a high powered deer rifle with scope. ............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ John Doe continued, "Just think... if Shane Ragland's family had been poor and had to actually LIVE on HOLMES STREET, where the 'real' Raglands made a fortune polluting the environment... NOT ONE PERSON would have had a problem with him being thrown into the trash of the penal system...". So, the "real" Raglands made a fortune on Holmes Street polluting the environment? You obviously do not know what you are talking about. Shane's grandfather was a modest man who worked for the phone company and would be mortified by his grandson's actions and the shame that Shane has brought to the family name. The Ragland "fortune" was made by Jerry in the same manner that most "big money" around here is made, real estate development and leasing properties to the state. Methinks you are cornfusing Ragland with Ratliff...

  • I know news is news but why couldn't the article just said that Ragland flipped his car on US 64 was thrown from the vehicle in serious condition and left it at that. The DiGiuro's needn't have been mentioned. Better yet why even report on it grant you it wasn't the only wreck on 64 and we didn't hear about those. Now if he had of been killed that would of been news worthy..sorry but I have no sympathy for this killer..Bodeen your right he laid in wait to kill..he had a choice and money set him free. I don't know if its Karma or not but what goes around comes around. I don't usually wish bad things on people, but I hope he broke some bones that take a long time to heal and is a painful process. As far as his family reading this I just imagine they quit reading things on this POS a long time ago. If not sorry you raised a killer.

  • To John_Doe: Everyone I know was outraged Ragland got off, and I don't know anyone who didn't want him to get "what he deserved". But the prosecution botched the case, to be frank, and his $ definitely got him a better defense. Welcome to the US justice system. And as far as "considering the Ragland family and their feelings," what makes us better people is not to treat people as they deserve. It's to treat people better than they deserve. No matter what someone's life story is, in my opinion, it's tasteless to gloat about their misfortune.

  • Just think... if Shane Ragland's family had been poor and had to actually LIVE on HOLMES STREET, where the 'real' Raglands made a fortune polluting the environment... NOT ONE PERSON would have had a problem with him being thrown into the trash of the penal system and the public would have been OUTRAGED if he had gotten off. Being RICH got the spoiled brat good lawyers and time to drag out the proceedings, and now the RICH SPOILED BRAT gets to live, travel, drive recklessly and become the fodder of news stories while Trent Digiurro is a footnote in the story. Please don't ask me to consider the Ragland family and their 'feelings'...

  • Something tells me if Trent Diguirro had been killed with a butcher knife instead of a GUN then there would have been a completely different discussion. SOMEHOW, when a GUN is used to KILL and innocent victim, it is NEVER an 'appropriate time' to talk about the situation. I grieve for the Digiuro family... but I find it difficult to grieve for the Ragland family who enabled and promoted the behavior and lifestyle that led to an arrogant, self-important spoiled rich kid killing another human being. Personally, I'm sick of hearing the Ragland name.

  • If a family member of mine had admitted to intentionally killing someone, I probably wouldn't be reading these stories...and if I did read them, I wouldn't be surprised to see negative comments about the admitted murderer.

  • It really isn't Karma, as that would imply some supernatural force is responsible. Nope, once again Shane's own stupidity has been his undoing.

  • What Ragland did was disgusting. So was the way his criminal case ended up. And so is the glee expressed below about "karma."

  • Any word on his condition?

  • "By acting like a bunch of spoiled children who take joy in another's misfortune you are showing the rest of us how petty, immature and spiteful you are. Isn't that the exact same way Shane behaved when he took Trent's life?" The short answer is H-E_double hockey sticks NO! Feeling petty, immature and spiteful and expressing that with righteous indignation is a lot different than the way that Shane behaved...these words are a lot different than bullets. It is Shane's Dad's rifle that he used to kill Trent. It is Shane's Dad's money that got him off scott-free. It is Shane's Dad's money that enables Shane to remain judgement proof from the civil wrongful-death case, where he was ordered to pay $63.4 million to DiGiuro's family...he hasn't had to pay a dime. So, Shane's family is hardly innocent in this matter, and in fact an case could be made that they were complicit in the cover up attempt and preventing some sort of justice to be served. Trent's family is tormented every day by the loss of their son AND by the fact that Shane walks around town (with that dumb look on his face) eating out with his Dad, who should have disowned this POS a long time ago. + Karma is a biatch!

  • Bodeen- The problem is that SHANE is not the one who reads these comments; his Grandma and other family members ARE. They are not responsible for the choices Shane has made and should not be subjected to gloating commentary about his accident and grim prognosis. If you are one of the many who claim to believe in karma then you should realize that you will be getting back some negativity for responding the way you have. Isn't it time for us all to show some common decency, and respect the feelings of those who had nothing to do with Trent's death? I doubt even the DiGiuro family would resort to the type of low class attacks I have seen all over the web today. Nothing will change what Shane did; but tormenting his family is not the way anyone should respond.

  • There's still a family attached to this and spare the people your echoing of the obvious.

  • Frankfortonian with all due respect, we are talking about a COLD BLOODED KILLER who doesn't value human life & robbed another family of a dear loved one just because he couldn't handle getting snobbed the same way he was brought up to treat people. There has been other victims of Shanes non caring lifestyle & it's kinda ironic that he finally became a victim of his own actions. We are talking about a man that waited in ambush & had plenty time to think about how he was going to murder his victim. Trents family was robbed of true justice because of money & wealth.

  • Thoughts and prayers to the Ragland family. Regardless of how you feel about Shane his family does not need to read people celebrating over a loved one's serious accident. Have some class. By acting like a bunch of spoiled children who take joy in another's misfortune you are showing the rest of us how petty, immature and spiteful you are. Isn't that the exact same way Shane behaved when he took Trent's life? Something to ponder...

  • Interesting...reported as not wearing a seat belt. I guess felt the "rules" still did not apply to him.

  • You got that right, 1713.

  • +Karma
