The Kentucky State University student who allegedly shot a man to death in Lexington was arraigned Wednesday afternoon in Fayette District Court.
The suspect, Dynell Stewart II, 21, of Tierra Linda Drive, pleaded not guilty to murder, assault and wanton endangerment. His next court date is scheduled for Feb. 7 at 8:30 a.m.
Early Sunday morning in Lexington, Stewart allegedly pulled his vehicle alongside another containing three men and shot two with a .40-caliber pistol. One victim, who according to court documents was shot multiple times in the head, later died.
Stewart is being held without bond. He was arrested by the Frankfort Police Department and booked around 11 p.m. Monday. He is now lodged in the Fayette County Detention Center.
Stewart was a member of the Kentucky State University football team, said Felicia Lewis, a spokeswoman for the school. A 2012 roster shows that Stewart is from Louisville and previously attended Union College.
A statement from KSU said Stewart is still a student there, and the university is beginning to conduct its own investigation.
“Our sympathy goes to the family of the victim who has died because of this tragedy,” the statement said. “Also, we fervently hope for the full recovery of the second victim.”
The Fayette County Coroner’s Office said Allen Smith, 23, was pronounced dead at about 6 p.m. on Monday at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center.
Records say the second victim, Jordan Orgeman, was shot once in the abdomen and is in serious condition at UK Medical Center.
A third passenger in the car, Anthony Garrett, told police he took cover during the shooting and heard 10 shots.
The shooting occurred around 3 a.m. Sunday near Tolly-Ho, a restaurant on South Broadway in Lexington. According to witnesses, the victims were shot while in a vehicle on Bolivar Street. Court documents say the victims’ car was parked at the time.
Video surveillance matched Stewart’s vehicle, which allegedly followed the victims’ vehicle and fled the scene after the assault.
