Two accused of thefts from church, businessMarch 20, 2008
Tonya Blackburn, a Frankfort woman with a criminal record, was accused by a grand jury Thursday of stealing more than $30,000 from her company. Melissa Dean, also of Frankfort, was charged by the same jury of stealing $10,000 from local high school football boosters and a church. The $30,000 theft was among 34 felony and six misdemeanor counts of theft by unlawful taking between June of 2007 and January 2008 in the indictment of Blackburn, 34, a secretary at Metal Werks. The indictments were handed out in Franklin Circuit Court. Commonwealth's Attorney Larry Cleveland said Blackburn wrote 40 checks to herself and pretended they were being issued to a vendor. "She was attempting to masquerade them as legitimate business expenses," Cleveland said. The largest forged check was written for $7,250 in January. Blackburn was convicted of theft by unlawful taking in a separate incident in May of 2007. She pleaded guilty to stealing $13,569.04 from the Frankfort Younger Women's Club and was granted a pre-trial diversion after reimbursing the money. The charges were expected to be dropped had Blackburn successfully completed her probation. Dean, 33, is accused of stealing more than $10,000 from the Western Hills High School Touchdown Club, a booster club to raise funds for the football team, and stealing money from the Church of the Ascension, where she was a secretary. Cleveland said Dean was forging signatures of church officials on payroll checks that were made out to her, then using the money to reimburse the Western Hills booster club fund. "These crimes are signs of the times," Cleveland said. "People aren't making enough money to keep up with $4 a gallon gas and high mortgages. We're seeing more of these types of crimes these days because times are hard." Also indicted Thursday:
Cleveland said Rogers would often drive King to cash his checks while he was inebriated then take the money for herself. Rogers was named King's life insurance policy beneficiary shortly before his death from a heart attack in November 2007. Cleveland said a relative of King's convinced the life insurance company not to pay off the policy until an investigation could be made. "One of his relatives then came to me and asked if anything could be done about the situation," Cleveland said. Preliminary hearings will likely occur for all suspects within the next few weeks. An indictment is a finding of probable cause that a crime has been committed, not a finding of guilt. Comments

The Deans and Blackburns have been a part of Frankfort for over 150 years.
How dare these young women tarnish the names of such good families. What does the price of gas have to do with it? I don't recall any of our old familie committing crims in the 70's during the gas crunch. Stop making excuses and let it be called what it is. It is stealing. Don't sugar coat it because you like the famlies. Feel for the innocent members of the families. Hope that anyone tempted to steal might not if the women are properly prosecuted. This seems to be a crime of greed and a sense of entitlement.

There are alot of people in this town that steal in other ways, and are just as guilty. People work in this town and aren't paid by the company. Since it isn't advertised they do it over and over--they know who they are--and don't even feel guily about STEALING money from their employees. They are THIEVES stealing money from families. I won't name the people, but you shouldn't have to check the BBB or city hall, (or the labor board)before taking a job, just to see if you will get paid. Just like these cases, nothing is done, so it happens over and over to innocent, hard-working people.

"Y" states that Melissa Dean is a wonderful person. I'm sure the parents of child molesters feel the same about their children. He was wonderful and would give the shirt off his back. Please forgive his affinity for children--he's wonderful!!
I've never considered someone who stole $20,000 wonderful. I guess I see your point. Melissa is so wonderful that when she was caught stealing from WHHS she planned on repaying them by stealing from the church. Background checks only reveal what people want you to know. For instance, if she had stole money from a previous job and allowed to pay it back without police involvement. This appears what WHHS was allowing this wonderful Saint to do when she was committing a wonderful serious of felonies. I don't have to forgive squat. I'm more of a do unto others person. I think she ought to rot in prison for stealing from children, stealing from the church, forging signatures, and betraying the trust of countless people. Including your trust. We're not crazy...we didn't STEAL the money. IT's been my experience that they only admit to a smaller percent of what they actually EMBEZZLED! You're crazy for attempting to convince us that she is anything more than a THIEF!! You are crazy for shifting the blame on the public (for not having ESP)and politicians. She was caught red handed. If she is such a wonderful person, convince your friend to plead guilty and save the tax payers the cost of finding her guilty. Wouldn't your bible demand that she accept blame? I guess she needs a little review of numbers 8 & 10 on the commandments list. I wonder if late at night, when it's quite and she reflects on this...is the remorse for stealing or for being stupid and being caught? But I do forgive you for defending your friend. It's hard to accept betrayal.

You people are crazy! I don't know Ms. Blackburn & I don't care too. But I do know the Deans and they are wonderful people. They have like 7 kids all of the older ones are intelligent, good kids. All active in sports & very well mannered. The younger ones seem to being doing just as well. The husband is great & Melissa is just as wonderful too. She has always been known to give you the shirt off her back to people who need it. Background checks would show this too. Never in trouble. I am not condoning what she is accused of doing but we may not necessarily know all of the facts & I thought that everyone is suppose to show forgiveness at some point. isn't that what the bible teaches us? NONE of us are perfect. Far from it. And who says she has no remorse? If there are mind readers out there, please come see me, I've got alot of peoples mind I think need reading. It would solve all crimes. Than Franfort would be perfect. Now that's funny! Besides our politicians have done twice as worse but you don't see anything happen to them. Why? Because they have money....and influence........to make people forget.

WHHS FAN, You apparently can't read. My comments are VERY clear. They both need to go to jail. What sickens me is how our judicial system in Frankfort is known for letting people like this go free without serving adequate time. For example, Tonya Blackburn has done this before...apparently she receive NO time, because she was able to do it again. Read and understand before you make your comments, because you and I are in agreement. They need to go to jail. By the way, I made no comments about children. Learn to read.

This is to Grateful Downtowner....I hope someone smacks you. Do you know either of these families? I doubt it. I do know Ms. Blackburn, albeit it's been years since I've worked with her. I was astounded when I heard of her first conviction and this second one makes me sick, as we all have hard times, and that is NO EXCUSE. I do believe both of these women deserve jail time, but to start making comments regarding thier children? How low and disgusting can you possibly be? Ms. Blackburn has (or at least had) a great husband who will continue to be there for thier child, as will the extended family. I don't know the Dean family personally however I have been told that they are all feeling the "shame" that Ms. Dean has inflicted upon them. I always thought that one should be judged by thier own merit and character, but I can see that those "grateful downtowners" believe only in guilt by association. I am disgraced to live in the same city with people that have that view.

Alot of people are effected by this (Melissa Dean) WHHS students/parents, the church and it's congrgation......I can't help but think of what her son goes through daily. I mean do you know her to say you could imagine what her children will turn out to be like? I would like to say I have spoke to her step-daughter and they were totally blind sided by this. Now granted her step-daughter is on her own and a VERY RESPONSIBLE and well grounded young lady. I would also like to say her husband is an absolute wonderful man/father who is still trying to process all of this. So please stick to the person who broke the law which is Melissa not her son nor her family.

Background checks are great tools for preventing theft for employers and small businesses. There is no excuse for stealing no matter what your circumstance.

(yiya0424) I don't know if you know Melissa Deans kids, but I do and your comments are unacceptable. My son is on the football team and has played football with her son for years. He is a good kid and it feeling the pain too. I don't think that we should judge him by the parents. Melissa stole not only from the church, school, football team, but her own son. This is something that she will have to learn to live with. I hope she goes to jail to break from this habit.

GreatfulDowntowner- How distasteful to speak of the children that might be involved in these situations. Your comment "Can't wait to see how their kids turn out" and "eliminate the further contamination of the community" You should be ashamed !!!!!!! What an evil comment to make toward innocent children. Your statement makes me ill. It seems as if you hope the children involved have a horrible life. Your cruel comments toward innocent childern is a contamintion to our community. Instead of making ignorant statements about the families involved you should take a look at your own faults!!!!
