Paula Smith, left, and Frankfort Independent School Board Chairwoman Sara Call watch as Rich Crowe signs documents after he was named the new Frankfort superintendent Monday.

Second Street School Principal Rich Crowe will be the next superintendent for Frankfort Independent Schools.

The board of education voted unanimously to hire Crowe Monday night.

"We are very excited about the future of our district," Board Member Greg Miklavcic said.
Crowe, who was given a four-year contract worth $94,000 a year, will replace current Superintendent
Dianne Cobb on July 1, when she retires.

Several friends and family members were on hand in the Frankfort High/Middle School auditorium to congratulate Crowe at the meeting. They gave him a standing ovation when his appointment was announced.

Crowe has 26 years experience working in the Frankfort area. He earned his undergraduate degree in elementary education at the University of Kentucky. Crowe received his master's in elementary education as well as his principalship and Rank 1 at Eastern Kentucky University.

He has been principal at Bald Knob Elementary School, Collins Lane Elementary School and SSS, where he has held the position for 10 years.

"I think our district epitomizes what public education should be about in America and I wanted to be a part in leading that," Crowe said after he accepted the position.

Board member Paul Looney said the success of SSS and Crowe's experience working with curriculum were important factors in the board's decision.

"The strides that Second Street has made since he's been principal over there were a big factor," Looney said. "Everything he brings as far as curriculum background was truly, really important to the board. We were really looking for somebody who could be a curriculum advisor to our whole district."
Crowe agreed his experience will help, but said he'll face different issues as superintendent.

"The budget side of the district is a lot more than the budget side of running a school," he said. "There's a heck of a lot more to financing an entire district. You've got to think about buses, think about food, athletics and everything else, it will be a little more difficult."

Crowe recognized that the district faces challenges with the new education budget, which cut funding in many areas.

"It's going to be tough," he said. "We've got decreased funding in Professional Development, (Extended School Services) and several other things. We're just going to have to really look at things and decide where our priorities need to be."
The school council at Second Street will begin searching for a new principal this week, Crowe said.

Haven't kept up- what's the story about all the out of towners? Is Smith originally from out of town, too?

My memories of Second Street School are sweet.

Anyone remember Mrs. Jones 2nd grade, Mrs. Johnson 3rd grade, Miss Dryer 4th grade? Mr. Ball was the principal.

Those were the days.

I hated elementary school! It was by far the worst pierod of my life! To this day my stomach gets queezy just to walk in the door. That basic smell that all elementary schools have forbids me at the door... BUT there was 2 grades of elementary I did enjoy. 2 years that were made alittle easier. I had Mr. Crowe as a 3rd grade and a 5th grade teacher.
For a few moments a day, I enjoyed myself under his direction. He's a GREAT teacher!! He truly cares about his students. I think Frankfort Independent made a GREAT DESCISION!! "Many may teach the youth, but only great ones are remembered!" --Professor Adler, UK 2001

I believe Mr. Crowe will make a great superintendent. Being in the district for 10 years, he knows what needs to be done and how to do it. Congrats to you Mr. Crowe!

I think that Mr. Crowe recognizes the needs of our district and that he is the best possible candidate to see that those needs are met. His heart is in this district and he truly cares about the future of each and every child in this district. If he wanted to work with children who were the perfect Christian mold he would have stayed at Collins Lane. He, instead, went where he knew he could have the most effect. With him as a superintendent I feel like our district will finally start to creep towards its full potential. Our high school will once again be the top and most recognized high school in Frankfort and Second Street will continue to progress.

His career and home life are two different subjects; his past should not dictate his future. Give the man a chance because as far as myself and a lot of other concerned citizens of Frankfort he is the best man for the job.

Congratulations!

FIBOE/Crowe's To Do List:

The curriculum level for Frankfort Independent schools is an ABSOLUTE DISGRACE. Raise the standards for our children, parents, teachers, and administrators.... because the majority of KY children ARE being left behind.

SSS needs a new building; After 10+ years Crowe should know that the stinch lingering in the building is Mold/Mildew.

How many more mistakes can this district make??
The board had the perfect candidate right in front of them (Mr. Smith) and blew it.
Great job board members - applause for yet ANOTHER mistake!

FIBOE did what they thought was best. That is all you can ask for. Only time will tell whether or not this will be good decision, and we'll never know if they could have made a better one. One thing we can all agree on, Crowe can not do any worse than the one that put the district in its current state. (i hope i didn't jinx it)

On a side note; it is my understanding that the majority of this Board's Members are relatively new and I have faith in them. They certainly can't do any worse than the more educated & experienced Board that hired the aforementioned. Plus, most of this board has a vested interest on personal levels.

GL & go w/God Mr. Crowe.

He did not have a clue in the needs of my son. The only thing he could come up with was making him hold boxes in his office. We switched schools and we had a complete positive turn around once we had an open, knowledgeable and concerned staff. Maybe if your child fits the typical christian mold he does great with them. I am not the only one that has experienced this, especially if there are other factors affecting behavior. Other factors that need more than a box to hold.

I know what SportsFan is alluding to, and can understand the concern. Several years back, Mr. Crowe's personal life was quite scandalous, and caused hard feelings for many people, especially those close to his wife, a teacher (at the time) in the county system. No person is perfect.

However, knowing him for 20+ years now, I see this now as an isolated incident. He is indeed a great leader, and truly cares about the success of the city district's kids. You can tell that by the wonderful relationship he has with Sam and Rachel, who are themselves great role models for their peers.
Congratulations, Rich!
