A clean sweep

Western Hills' softball team won the Bryan Station Defender Classic this weekend, improving to 23-3.
In WHHS' first game Friday afternoon against Bryan Station, Western Hills pitcher Miranda Buchanan struck out the side in the first inning. Batting in the bottom of the first, WHHS' Tara Arnold was hit by a pitch, Lauren Triplett singled, and Stephanie Wade singled to drive in Arnold and Triplett.

Sabrina Sandoval then reached on an error and scored on a triple by Katie Wiard, who moved to third on a throw and scored on an over-throw by the catcher. The Lady Wolverines were leading 5-0 when rain set in and postponed the rest of the game until Saturday.

Starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, after one out Arnold singled and stole second, then scored on a double by Buchanan. Autumn Lancaster, running for Buchanan, scored on a single by Wade. Wade moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a base hit by Aneatria Whaley, making the score 8-0 after two innings.
WHHS added two runs in the third for a 10-0 score, and the game was called in the fifth inning. Buchanan finished with 10 strikeouts.

In the second round the Lady Wolverines faced Corbin, and Krystal Cammuse pitched for WHHS. Corbin scored one run in the first inning and another in the fourth to lead 2-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, with one out, Triplett, Buchanan and Wade all singled to load the bases and on a 2-2 count, Whaley hit a grand slam home run over the left centerfield fence to put the Lady Wolverines up 4-2. Each team added another run with WHHS winning 5-3. Cammuse pitched five innings and Buchanan pitched the final two.

Western Hills faced Rowan County in the championship game. WHHS scored first with a run in the first as Arnold singled, moved to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on a fly ball by Triplett.

The Lady Wolverines added two runs in the second for a 3-0 lead, and they scored three more in the sixth.
Wade reached on an error, Whaley singled, and Adrienne Quire hit a home run to make the score 6-0.
Rowan scored three runs in he bottom of the inning to make the final score 6-3. Buchanan struck out 11 batters.

Named to the all-tournament team for WHHS were Arnold, Buchanan, Wade and Whaley. Buchanan was named MVP for the tournament.

WHHS plays at Lexington Catholic Tuesday.
