Frankfort

Frankfort Arts Foundation's 2007-08 season continues with Award Winning Bands on beginning at 7:30 p.m. FRIDAY in Bradford Hall on the Kentucky State University campus. The event features from KSU, Franklin County and Western Hills.

FAF season tickets will be honored and general admission tickets, priced at $10/adult and $5 for students and children will be available in the Bradford Hall foyer beginning at 6:30. Children under 6 are admitted free.

The final program in the season is the annual Leadingham Prose-Poetry Reading set for May 24 at the Church of the Ascension, Washington St.

The senior art exhibit of Jennifer Lawson continues through FRIDAY in Jackson Hall Gallery on the Kentucky State University campus. Lawson is presenting archival digital photographs, sculpture, and original furniture designs. Gallery hours are 9-5 daily, or by appointment by calling Reba Rye, 597-5994.

Several events are planned to help raise money for Frankfort High School's Project Graduation.

>A Carnival for Kids is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. SATURDAY at Lakeview Park. Admission is $8 and the event features face painting, a bounce house and obstacle course as well as a dunk tank from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The dunk tank will feature teachers, principals and staff members.

>A golf scramble is also scheduled for 9 a.m. SATURDAY at Lakeview Park. Cost is $20 for nine holes with cart. Lunch will be provided.

>From May 15-18 FHS will host a silent auction during the senior play to raise money.

Spring Thing 2008 is set for SATURDAY, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. in downtown Frankfort. The event features classic cars, muscle cars, street rods, and this year various race cars and motorcycles. It will be staged on both sides of Broadway and St. Clair.

The Activate America 5K Race and Fun Run/Walk is set to step off at 9 a.m. SATURDAY from the new Capitol. All proceeds from the event will help support the Frankfort YMCA Strong Kids Campaign.

You can register or get more information on line at www.frankfortymca.org. For more information call 875-9276. Race day registration begins at 7:30 in front of the Capitol.

The race begins and ends in front of the Capitol. All participants will receive a short-sleeve Activate America 5K T-shirt.

Operation Half-Note Incorporated will perform Jacobson and Higgins Bugz at 7:30 p.m. MONDAY in Bradford Hall on the Kentucky State University campus. The production is sponsored by KSU and Links Inc. There's no admission.

The Capital City Chorale's annual Spring Concert is set for 7 p.m. TUESDAY at First Presbyterian Church, 416 W. Main St. The concert will feature classical and gospel music along with selections from Big River, the Bluegrass Theatre Guild's summer musical.

Tickets are $6 at the door. Children six and under are admitted free. A reception will follow the concert.

Frank W. Sower will be honored at a reception 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at the Frankfort/Franklin County Senior Citizens Center, 202 Medical Heights Dr. A recognition program is planned for 5:45. The public is invited.

Sower, a local businessman and former mayor of Frankfort, is being honored for his support of the Senior Citizens Center and his service and generosity to Frankfort, Franklin County and the state.

Vernissage will take place 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 15, in the cafeteria at Franklin County High School.

Vernissage is an art rental program with the option to buy and it is held in a silent auction style. There will be music performed by the jazz band and individual students. There will be food for those participating in the auction.

The Western Hills High School Spring Choral Concerts are set for Thursday, May 15, 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium at the high school and at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 22, at the Church of the Ascension, Washington Street.

The Switzer Ruritan Club is hosting a community fish fry from 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 16 at the North Fork Baptist Church in Switzer. The menu features fried fish, hush puppies, onion rings, coleslaw and desserts. The cost is $5 per adult and $3 per child.

The Frankfort Children Singers conclude their fifth year with a free spring concert set for 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at First Baptist Church, 201 St. Clair. The choir, directed by Linda McKinley, has 42 members, grades two through eight. Most are from Franklin County with some from Shelby and Anderson counties.

Several homes and gardens will be on the Historic Home and Garden Tour set for May 17-18. The theme for the event is Living in History and it's jointly sponsored by The Garden Club of Frankfort and the Colonial Dames of America. Tickets are $15 each and may be purchased at Liberty Hall on the tour days.

A May Market will also be held on May 17, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., at Liberty Hall. Admission is free and the event will feature antique appraisals by Jeff Garrison, vendors of garden accessories, pottery, food and music.

Homes and gardens on the tour include Liberty Hall, The Beeches, the Bibb House, the Franklin County Alms House and Poor Farm, and the Frank Lloyd Wright House.

Gardens and other attractions include the gardens at Liberty Hall, the Halliday garden in Country lane, the Comley's garden in the Corner in Celebrities, the gardens and chapel at the Frankfort Cemetery, the gardens at the Old Governor's Mansion and the Governor's Mansion.

May is Preservation Month and the theme this year is Preservation Matters.

Artwork by members of the Capital Area Art Guild is on display through May in the fourth floor community room of Farmers Bank downtown. An artists' reception is set for 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. The exhibit is open during regular banking hours.

An exhibition of the work of John Stephen Hockensmith, equine photographer from Georgetown, is on display during May and June at the Paul Sawyier Library, 319 Wapping St.

Gallery Hall in the Wesley Center at First United Methodist Church, 211 Washington St., is open 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. weekdays and Sundays. Now on display is Fabulous Fiber featuring quilts made in the 1800s, hand-woven textiles, needlework from the 1800s, original hooked rugs, cross stitch and many other offerings.

The exhibit will remain on display until June when it will be replaced with Weddings Across the Centuries.

Salato Wildlife Education Center, Louisville Road, hours of operation through May are Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and 10-5 on Saturdays.

>Wildlife biologist Danny Watson will lead a bird walk SATURDAY, 7-9:30 a.m. This is a great opportunity for all bird enthusiasts to enjoy the sounds of nature on the hiking trails at the Salato Wildlife Education Center. The cost is $10 with registration and pre-payment required.

>Brown Bag Lunch "The Flight of the Honey Bee," noon, Wednesday May 14, noon-1 p.m. No cost, no limit. Dr. Tom Webster, bee specialist from Kentucky State University, will talk about the importance of bees.

>Mary Carol Cooper, native plant coordinator with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, will lead a Wildflower Hike 1-4 p.m. Saturday, May 17. The cost is $10 with registration and pre-payment required.

Tickets are on sale now for $5 each for Cow Pasture Bingo set for 3 p.m. May 18 as part of this year's Project Graduation. Those purchasing tickets are eligible for a $1,000 prize and do not need to be present to win.

The fourth annual Civil War Park Clean-up Day at the Fort Boone Civil War Battle Site in the Leslie Morris Park on Fort Hill has been scheduled for 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, May 24. The event was postponed from its original date because of inclement weather.

The event is sponsored by The History Channel, the Civil War Preservation Trust; Frankfort Parks, Recreation, and Historic Sites; Frankfort Public Works, The Dry Stone Conservancy, and the Friends of Fort Hill. Plans are to clean out the powder magazine, pick up trash, remove fallen tree limbs, and cut firewood.

Those wishing to participate should call the Capital City Museum, 696-0607. A sign-up sheet is also available on the reception desk at the museum, 325 Ann St. All participants will receive a T-shirt compliment of THC.

Liberty Hall Historic Site is open for tours Tuesday through Saturday at 10:30 a.m., noon, 1:30 and 3 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and $1 for students under 18 years of age. Children 4 and under are free. Tours begin at Liberty Hall and proceed to the Orlando Brown House.

Georgetown

The Hidden Treasurers Antique Show will be held May 16-18 under tents in the downtown area. Admission is free. Space is available for set up and may be reserved by calling Gretchen at (502) 863-2538.

Show hours are May 16, 5-8 p.m.; May 17, 9-5, and May 18, 11-4.

Bagdad

Bagdad Days, an annual two-day festival in this small eastern Shelby County community about 10 miles west of Frankfort off US 60, begins FRIDAY and continues all day SATURDAY.

Booths open at 11 a.m. Friday. Lunch will also begin being served then, too. A Little Miss and Mister Pageant begins at 6. Events continue until around 10 Friday night with the completing of "The Challenge of the Minds." Friday night dinner is at 5 with rides opening then, too.

A 5K (3.1-mile) Run/Walk is at 8 a.m. Saturday with the pancake breakfast beginning at 7:30. The parade begins at 10. Other festivities include a bakeoff (11 a.m.), pedal pull for kids (1 p.m.), auction (1:30), and corn hole tournament (6 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday). Things start winding down at about 4 p.m.

Lexington

Tickets are on sale for the Hank Williams Jr. and Lynyrd Skynyrd Throw-Down set fort Friday, May 30 at Rupp Arena. James Otto will appear as a special guest star. Owen County

The 2008 Elk Creek Blues Festival will be held from 5-9:30 p.m. Saturday, May 31 at Elk Creek Vineyards, 150 Highway 330. For ticket information visit www.elkcreekvineyards.com.

The event features Buddy Guy, Roomful of Blues and Sonny Moorman.

Louisville

Continuing through June 29 at the Speed Museum is Raw Loop, an exhibition of the work of Austrian artist Werner Reiterer.
