Majority Whip to retire in December

Rep. Rob Wilkey, D-Scottsville, announced Thursday that he will not seek a seventh term. He has served in the General Assembly since being elected in 1996 and represents Allen, Simpson and Warren counties.

In explaining the reasons for his decision, Wilkey said that his service in the General Assembly has been possible due to the significant sacrifice of his family and his employer. Wilkey and his wife of 29 years, Terry, have two children, Grace, 16, and Seth, 11.

"The truth is, I feel it is more important for me to be at home and be a full-time dad for my children at this time," he said. "That is my first obligation."

His peers elected Wilkey House Majority Whip in January 2007.

He plans to file the appropriate documents with the Secretary of State in June, after which the political parties in the 22nd district will have ten days to nominate candidates to run on the November ballot.

He will serve the remainder of his term, which runs through the end of the year.

Capitol selected for green program

The Capitol campus in Frankfort has been selected to participate in the National Governor's Association "Greening State Capitols" program.

Kentucky is one of 20 states to participate in the program, which is co-sponsored by Wal-Mart.

Kentucky's selection for this program comes on the heels of First Lady Jane Beshear's Earth Day announcement of plans to make the Kentucky Governor's Mansion and homes across the commonwealth more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

"The selection of our state Capitol for this program fits well with the Beshear Administration's efforts to make our homes, our communities, offices and state buildings more energy efficient and environmentally friendly," said Finance and Administration Cabinet Secretary Jonathan Miller.

Over the next year, engineering experts will visit Kentucky's Capitol Campus to examine lighting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, as well as refrigeration equipment and building structures.

Kentucky will then receive recommendations on how to improve the energy efficiency in its Capitol building.
