Lady Flyers team remains intact in second round

Franklin County's girls tennis team has everyone still playing after the first two rounds of the Region 8 tournament.

The Lady Flyers have eight points and are tied for the lead with defending regional champion North Oldham after Monday's action at Western Hills.

The tournament continues at WHHS today with quarterfinals in the girls singles and doubles beginning at 4:30 p.m.

"We didn't suffer a letdown, which is what you worry about," FCHS coach Jeff Kell said, "but things get a lot tougher starting tomorrow."

Bullitt East and South Oldham are tied for second place with seven points each. WHHS has four points and one player " seventh-seeded Katie Howard " playing in the quarterfinals.

Frankfort High finished the tournament with two points.

The Lady Flyers have two No. 2 seeds in the tournament " Lauren Doll in singles and the doubles team of Jamie Harp and Hillary Kell. The top two seeds in singles and doubles received first-round byes.

Doll defeated Gallatin County's Jaclyn Clark 6-0, 6-0 in the second round and will face Howard today in the quarterfinals.

Howard defeated FHS' Rachael Wylie 6-3, 6-0 in the first round, then beat South Oldham's Abby Shields 6-1, 6-1.

Harp and Kell had little trouble in their only match Monday, beating Shelby County's Shatia Rogers and Sana Saiyed 6-1, 6-0.

"Tomorrow we have a tough draw to contend with," coach Kell said.

FCHS' other entries " Sara Kellerman and the doubles team of Claire Curran and Sam Criswell " are also seeded, and they face higher seeds today in the quarterfinals.

Curran and Criswell, seeded seventh, will face defending regional champions and top-seeded Stephanie Townsend and Rachel Wurster of North Oldham. The FCHS team defeated FHS' Emily Kennedy and Natalie Waddle 6-1, 6-1 in the first round and WHHS' Audrey Lewis and Mackenzie Harbin 6-1, 7-5 in the second round.

Lewis and Harbin advanced to the second round with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Gallatin County's Olivia Hendren and Jessica Cook.

Kellerman, also seeded seventh, takes on No. 3 seed Tabitha Collins of Bullitt East today. Kellerman won two matches Monday " 6-1, 6-0 over Carroll County's Priya Patel and 6-0, 6-0 over Amy Miller of Frankfort High.

Miller won her first-round match 6-4, 6-3 over Spencer County's Mercedes Andrade.

"The day went pretty much according to seeding," Kell said. "We only had two seeds lose."

One of those was Oldham County's Amy Smith, the sixth seed. She was eliminated from the tournament in the first round by Western Hills' Sarah Roberts, who won 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Roberts lost in the second round to South Oldham's Alex Tolsdorf 6-3, 6-2.

The other seed to lose was the eighth-seeded doubles team of Katie Kent and Hannah Guest of Oldham County.

Frankfort High picked up a point in doubles when Hannah LeCompte and Abby LeCompte defeated Gallatin's Rachel May and Anna Beth Edens 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the first round.

In the second round, sixth-seeded Chelsea Fain and Leslie Hanlin of South Oldham defeated the LeComptes 6-2, 6-0.

In the other match involving local players, WHHS' doubles team of Jenna Mills and Catelynn Kenner lost to fourth-seeded Stacey Schal and Katie Wampler of North Oldham 6-0, 6-0.
