Blue Grass Community Action is asking the Frankfort community for help.
With the hot summer, many have no air conditioning or even a fan.
The disabled, elderly or those with medical conditions can't pay $100 or $150 for even a small window unit on their fixed income, according to community developer Sharon West.
"With the economy the way it is, people's budgets are already stretched to the limit," West said.
West, who has been in charge of the program for the past 10 years, said she has about 25 on a waiting list to receive an air conditioning unit and none are available to lend.
"Everybody should be entitled to an air conditioned environment," West said. "It disturbs me when I leave work and it's hot outside. I think about these people."
Though Community Action is the only agency that provides this sort of assistance, the program is strictly funded by donations.
Although they are tax deductible, West says they've been difficult to collect.
"This is the worst year for donations and the economy is a lot of it," West said.
"But even if they have an old air conditioner sitting in the garage or a fan they don't use, we'll take it."
The Blue Grass Community Action Group takes money, used air conditioning units and new or used fans.
With the money they collect, West said she purchases fans and units for those who are without.
"I require people to show me a doctor's statement specifying their condition," West said. "I try to give air conditioners to those who are in the most need, but it can be hard to pick and choose."
"In a perfect world, I wish I could provide every person who called me with one," she added.
Without donations, West said unfortunately, she'd be happy just providing people with fans.
"I would at least like to provide people with two fans each. Something to help with the heat."

Really? I didn't have air conditioning until I was 20; I'm 46 now and I still don't use it all that much at home or in the car. I'm all for the elderly getting cooled off, but no one is "entitled" to it. Too bad the good Lord didn't see fit to providing an earth that was 70 degrees all day every day, all over the earth. |
