For the 10th annual Flyer Classic, Franklin County boys golf coach James Myers is doing what he always does " bringing in some of the top teams in the state. "We want to play the best," Myers said. "That's the only way to get better. We could invite a bunch of scrubs in and get a victory, but it wouldn't mean anything." The boys golf tournament will be played Monday and Tuesday with Monday's round at Griffin Gate Resort in Lexington and Tuesday's round at Juniper Hill. Among the 24-team field are eight teams that competed in last year's state tournament " St. Xavier, Dunbar, Lexington Christian, Christian Academy of Louisville, Madison Central, Elizabethtown,Greenup County and South Laurel. The host Flyers and Western Hills will also be competing. "This is always one of the best fields in the state," Myers said. "One reason it's stepped up this year is because LCA and St. X are playing. This is the first time in six years that LCA has been back." FCHS opened its season Saturday at the Clark County Invitational and shot a 321. Lexington Christian won the tournament with a 3-over-par 291, beating Dunbar by eight strokes. LCA sent its B team to a tournament in Pikeville, and LCA shot 5-over-par to win that tournament. "Lexington Christian is the favorite to win the state tournament," Myers said. "You can't count out Marshall County because they're the defending state champion, but Lexington Christian is at a level none of the rest of us are at. "They're in a whole different league," he added. "They have 10 kids. All 10 could play college golf, and five to seven of them could play Division I golf." Past Flyer Classic champions in this year's field include FCHS, Madison Central, Lexington Catholic, Henry Clay and defending champion Dunbar. "We're looking forward to having a great field," Myers said, "and I'm looking forward to my team improving." Playing on FCHS' team in the tournament will be Righter Dundon, Dylan Hurst, Jared Schimmels, Daniel Barber and Bryan Steitz. Playing as individuals will be FCHS' Kyle Scott and Brandon Smither.
