FRIDAY'S MATCHUPS

Share_print Print Story    |    Comments    |

GRANT CO. VS. WESTERN HILLS
at Grant Co.
Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.
Records: Western Hills (0-0), Grant Co. (1-0).
Last week: Western Hills had an open week; Grant Co. defeated Pendleton Co. 28-13 in the Grant Co. Gridiron Kickoff
WHHS notes: Western Hills is hoping that an extra week to prepare for Grant County will make all the difference. Last season the Wolverines lost 35-14 to the Braves. This season WHHS comes with a new offensive wrinkle in the Jet offense coach Don Miller has implemented. Junior quarterback Dylan Curry will need to make good decisions on field and Darius Reed, Josh Bell, Chris Pugh and Josh Preston will all need to be on top of their game to make this new scheme work.

A look at Grant Co.
Mascot: Braves
Class: 5A
Head coach: Mike Davis
Last year's record: 6-4 (did not make playoffs)
Key players: Joe Sodden (QB), Rex Benson (RB), Dillon Pelphrey (RB)
Points scored: 28 Points allowed: 13
Notes: Senior quarterback Joe Sodden is the leader of the Braves offense. He threw for more than 1,000 yard last season with 11 TD passes and ran for nearly 400 more yards with two TDs. Look for Sodden and Rex Benson to hook up on the option as the Braves run a spread-style offense. Sodden will also go to the air to one of his favorite targets Dillon Pelphrey out of the backfield.

SPENCER CO. VS. NO. 4 FRANKFORT
at Sower Field
Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.
Records: Frankfort (1-0), Spencer Co. (0-1).
Last week: Frankfort defeated Williamsburg 19-14 in the Chritian Classic at Lexington Christian; Spencer Co. lost to Bullitt Central 34-7
FHS notes: Coming off last week's close game with Williamsburg, Frankfort is looking to improve this week. Keri Metcalf did well in his first game starting at QB with two touchdown passes to Dwight Tillman - one was for 65 yards. The Panthers hope their newfound passing game and always dangerous running game will get better this week on top of last week's good defensive showing.

A look at Spencer Co.
Mascot: Bear
Class: 3A
Head coach: Matt Powenski
Last year's record: 6-5 (lost to North Oldham 42-21 in first round of playoffs)
Key players: Shawn Berger (RB/LB), Cameron Smith (RB/DB), Chris Taylor (RB/DB)
Points scored: 7 Points allowed: 34
Notes: The Bears struggled offensively last week against Bullitt Central. They only managed a little under 250 yards of total offense - 212 of which came on the ground. Chris Taylor led team last season with 959 yards rushing on 138 carries and had 13 touchdowns. Last week he was held to 72 yards and had one TD. Cameron Smith led the team last week in rushing with 98 yards - he was second last season with 555 yards and seven TDs. Shawn Berger, a linebacker, led the team with nine tackles against Bullitt Central.

LAFAYETTE VS. NO. 6 FRANKLIN CO.
at Ishmael Stadium
Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.
Records: Franklin Co. (1-0), Lafayette (0-1).
Last week: Franklin Co. defeated Waggener 72-2; Lafayette lost to North Bullitt 28-21
FCHS notes: The Flyers destroyed Waggener last week and know that this week's matchup will pose a much bigger challenge. Sean Thompson hopes to continue to lead the offense into Ishmael Stadum Friday. Last week Thompson threw for five TDs and ran in two on his own. His favorite target was DeRon Hicks who caught four TD passes - the longest a 72-yard bomb in the first quarter.

A look at Lafayette
Mascot: General
Class: 6A
Head coach: Rob Sayre
Last year's record: 8-3 (lost to Dnubar 8-0 in first round of playoffs).
Key players: Eric Shaw (RB/DB), Darnell Burnside (RB), Matt Britt (QB)
Points scored: 21 Points allowed: 28
Notes: The Generals have lots of talent at the skill positions this season but are lacking experience at quarterback. Last season's QB Logan Bunch had 1,804 passing yards and 10 TDs. Filling Bunch's shoes this season is sophomore Matt Britt. Britt was 9-of-22 passing last week with 171 yards and one TD. Eric Shaw carried the load for Lafayette last week with all three of the Generals' TDs - two rushing and one receiving. Burnside is also a big-time runner for Lafayette. He had 620 yards and 12 TDs last season.
