A one-sided rout turned into a contentious match Thursday night at Sower Soccer Field 1 when the No. 10-ranked team in the state, South Oldham, held off Franklin County 6-4 after a second half charge by the Flyers. Josh Bruning scored the 10th goal of the game off a corner kick from Bryce Burton with 1:52 in regulation to pull the Flyers within two, but it was too little too late for Franklin County, which at one point was down 5-0. A wild 30 minutes concluded the match. Six yellow cards were issued in the second half, three on each team, and six goals were scored " four of them by the Flyers. FCHS coach Zac Donnelly said he was pleased with the way his team played in the second half after falling behind four goals at halftime. "At halftime, I told them, "Let's put the score behind us now and go out there and win this half,'" Donnelly said. "That's what they did. "I enjoyed the way we played in the second half. It shows me that they got a lot of pride and heart to come back from 4-0." Franklin County could never quite threaten the Dragons lead, however. The Flyers came within two scores on two occasions, the first being at the 20:16 mark when Jason Shaw's goal pulled FCHS within two scores at 3-5. Shaw's goal capped off a scoring barrage by the Flyers in which they poured in three goals in less than three minutes. Jacob Messinger got Franklin County started at the 22:56 mark in the second half when his corner kick deflected off South Oldham keeper Mike Bothur into the net to make the score 5-1. Two and a half minutes later, Lyndon McKee passed ahead to Oscar Urbina who looped a shot into the left side of the net. Shaw's goal came a mere 10 seconds later. "If a few balls go our way, we could have had a 5-5 ballgame," Donnelly said. "It was a high scoring match." Playing their third match in four nights, the Flyers (8-3-0) came out looking slow and timid against the visiting Dragons in the first half. South Oldam's Doug Gintham scored two goals in the first 15 minutes of action " including one from 40 yards deep " to help the Dragons (8-1-0) to their four-goal advantage. Earlier in the week, the Flyers beat Madison Southern 5-1 and Dixie Heights by the same score to advance to the finals of the Berea Cup Saturday at Madison Southern High School in Berea. Donnelly admitted this week's scheduling was a bit overwhelming but said the four-match week will help prepare his team for the district tournament. "I think this is going to prepare us for the end of the season," Donnelly said. "When you get to district tournament, you play three games in five days, and I want to be able to play 80 minutes of soccer and go hard. I think this will prepare us to do that." In the Berea Cup final, the Flyers will face Berea, which defeated East Jessamine 2-1 in a shootout Thursday. After finishing as the runner-up at the Capital City Classic, Donnelly said his team is focused on winning this tournament. "That would be a big win for us," he said. "We set our goals at the beginning of the year to win all the tournaments we entered. Taking runner-up at the Capital City Classic was a little disappointing so they've been focused on trying to win this tournament." SAYRE 3, LADY FLYERS 1 On Sower Soccer Field 2 Thursday, the Lady Flyers fell to Sayre 3-1. Freshman Brooke Barber scored the lone goal for Franklin County off an assist from Ramsey Tandy. The Lady Flyers move on to play at Mercer County next Monday. Comments
