April Cole and Renee Mills have more than 30 years of photography experience between them.

So when they opened Digital Expressions Photography on July 7, the co-owners say they knew they could provide the Frankfort community with a unique experience.

"We like making memories," Mills said. "It's exciting and fun. We want the photography to tell a story."

Digital Expressions Photography does everything from weddings, engagements, special events and photography to senior portraits, children, family pets and the equine scene. Mills says the studio is the only one in Frankfort that offers boudoir photography.

"It makes a good wedding or anniversary gift for your spouse," she said. "Plus I think women feel more comfortable with women photographers."

But the two women are more than business partners - they are friends. In fact, Mills' son, Boo LeCompte, and Cole's daughter, Kirsten LaBree, are dating, according to Mills.

"We offer a relaxed atmosphere because we are friends," Cole said. "We feed off of each other. Our families are close and we enjoy working together."

And they get a lot of help from their families. Mills' husband, Allen Mills, builds a lot of the props, according to the photographers, and LaBree is known to answer the phone.

"We've got a lot of support," Mills said.

She and Cole, a member of the Lexington Creative Camera Club, say this isn't the first gig they've had together. They worked at another photography studio for three years.

"We wanted to open this studio to offer a different experience," Mills said.

Their unique feel, Cole says, is because of their ability to give customers that "wow experience."

"I like to have fun with Photoshop," she said. "Whether behind the camera or sitting in front of the computer, we want to create a lasting memory for the customer."

Both photographers say they started Digital Expressions out of their own pockets because they love all dimensions of taking pictures.

"You're not doing the same thing all of the time," Cole, who also shoots for Tops in Lexington, said. "I like to vary my photography. I have had a camera in my hand since I was 17. It's who I am."

Mills agreed.

"It's a part of us," she said. "I'm about the kids. I like the fun family poses."

Whether it's in the studio or on location, Cole and Mills say they take the time to ensure clients are happy. They schedule at least an hour and a half for each appointment.

"We don't want customers to feel rushed," Mills said. "We want them to warm up to us so we can give them the pictures they want."

The photography studio also schedules separate viewing appointments so clients can get full attention when selecting photos. The photos also come with a CD, Mills says.

"We also have the capability to print on location," Cole added. "Like for event photography. We offer the latest equipment and technology."

Currently, Digital Expressions is offering a few specials for their grand opening, Mills says, as well as already booking holiday photos through December.

As for now, the duo say they get satisfaction out of people enjoying their photography.

"Customers seemed to be very pleased with the experience," Cole said.
