A lawsuit accuses a Frankfort doctor of amputating a man's penis without his consent, according to a newspaper.

A malpractice suit was filed in Shelby County Circuit Court last week against Dr. John Patterson of Frankfort, who performed the surgery, Dr. Oliver James of Shelbyville, who administered the anesthetic, and Commonwealth Urology, PSC according to the Shelbyville Sentinel.

Phillip and Deborah Seaton of Waddy, say Phillip went to Patterson last October for a circumcision, which resulted in the doctor removing Phillip's penis, according to the newspaper.

The lawsuit states that, "Despite having no consent to remove his penis and despite being advised by Phillip that he did not want him to remove any part of his penis other than the foreskin, Dr. Patterson removed the penis," the newspaper reported.

James is included in the suit because he gave Seaton a general anesthetic after assuring the patient he wouldn't, according to the Sentinel.

"Because Dr. James changed the anesthesia to general anesthesia, he allowed Dr. Patterson to amputate Phillip's penis," according to the suit. "Without that change, the surgery would have ended."

The lawsuit claims that the actions of Patterson and James were intentional, willful and wanton, according to the Sentinel.

The suit says that Seaton has suffered and will suffer much mental anguish and pain, as well as a loss of enjoyment of life, and that he will incur medical expenses because of the injury.

I saw a letter to the editor regarding this but it only said there were 51 doctors who signed the letter, the names weren't listed. AND naturally, the Scope section isn't online. I'd like to know which doctors support Dr. Patterson, for future reference.

I'm going to school for my RN. That does not make me an expert by any means. But when my mother was having a lump removed from her breast and it was found to be cancer, she had given me power of att. and the doctor came out of surgery and explained the situation to me and I gave consent. And my mother had already signed a consent that if it looked bad he could do what was best. ( this was before we had better equipment like MRIs to check out things. Wouldn't the doctors have asked the wife?

Not knowing the details I can not judge the doctors. But I am sure that even if there was no alternitive to the removal of the penis, it would still be traumatic for anyone. Women who loose brests feel awful about their bodies most times too.

My honest first gut reaction was,"OWEY" Poor guy.

Its a shame that the doctors should have in the very least rescheduled the surgey and informed him of what they were going to do. After all i would rather die of cancer then to miss out on the pleasures in life. it has to be embarrassing and devasting to have ones member cut off.

I would just like to add that I support Dr. Patterson. It's hard to comment on this case in particular because I don't know all the facts. However, I have been a patient of Dr. Patterson's, as has my 4 year old daughter, my mother, my father AND my grandfather. Dr. Patterson has performed surgery on myself and my daughter and I was completely satisfied w/ his expertise and professionalism. I would not hesitate to see him again, if needed.

To "doesitreallymattereddie?" there was an article in the Scope section of the State Journal on Sunday that listed the names of the doctors that support Dr. Patterson.
