LEXINGTON - Strong races against a strong field left the top two local finishers happy with their performances at the Franklin County Invitational cross country meet Saturday.

In the boys varsity race, which covered 5,000 meters, Western Hills' Daniel Thurston was third in 16:19.87, and Franklin County's Robert Sandlin was 16th in 17:05.68.

Both runners set personal records on the Kentucky Horse Park course.

Thurston was the top Class 2A runner in the race, won by Shelby County's Stacey Eden in 16:05.78. St. Xavier's Jackson Carnes was second in 16:09.11. Shelby County and St. X are both Class 3A schools.

"I ran a PR, and I was ahead of the competition I needed to be," Thurston said, "and I beat a St. X guy, Thomas Mann, that I'd never beaten before. It was a good race."

Mann was fourth in 16:25.04 as St. X took the team title with 75 points.

Thurston was running a close third behind Eden and Carnes early in the race.

"It was about a mile and three-quarters into it when they started to pull away," Thurston said. "I tried to keep the same increments of distance between us and keep my pace."

The Wolverines' Brandon Pulliam was the third local runner in, finishing 30t in 17:28.12.

Saturday's meet was the fifth of the season for Franklin County.

"I started off really good," Sandlin said about the season. "My first race I ran in 17:16, and then I've been in the 18s. It's good to get back down in the low 17s."

Sandlin's strategy for Saturday's race was pretty straightforward.

"Just go out fast and get a good start " I've been starting off slow " and hang on," he said.

The Flyers finished 25th in the 40-team field, and WHHS was 27th.

On the girls side Franklin County was 32nd in the team standings. Senior Finnja Ramcke led the Lady Flyers, finishing 149th in 23:11.97 for 5,000 meters.

FCHS has 11 girls and 11 boys out for this year's team.

"We have some new kids who've come in and are running varsity," FCHS coach Kelly Lewis said. "Robert has stepped it up this year, and we're hoping to continue to improve and run PRs at the regionals.

"They're improving and working hard in practice. I'm pleased with what they've done."

Elkhorn Middle finished eighth in the boys middle school race and ninth in the girls race. Frankfort Christian Academy also competed in the middle school races, with the girls placing 12th and the boys 15th.
