Jurors deliberated six hours before delivering a guilty verdict late Wednesday to a man who murdered his Frankfort cousin and became one of "America's Most Wanted."

Ronnie Dontell Drane stared blankly, shaking his head, as Franklin Circuit Judge Thomas Wingate read the verdict " his fourth murder conviction in a string of killings in Indiana and Kentucky.

Prosecutors described how Drane, 34, killed his first cousin, Herman Buchanan, in 2003.

Buchanan, prosecutors said, was the only eyewitness to Drane's 2002 double murder of Dolores Buchanan, Drane's aunt and Herman's mother, and Larry Peaches in Gary, Ind.

Herman Buchanan was also shot during the killings, but survived and moved to Frankfort to hide from Drane, said Commonwealth's Attorney Larry Cleveland.

Cleveland, who prosecuted the case, told The State Journal Wednesday Drane and his father, Ricky, enlisted the help of Claude Fisher, 48, to help kill Buchanan at a Louisville nightclub.

Their plan never came to fruition, but Drane caught up with Buchanan at his home in the Forrest Villa Apartments off the East-West Connector and fatally shot him with a handgun, according to testimony.
Cleveland's prosecution mainly involved testimony from two witnesses " Fisher and Simeon Bradley, 32, who was in the residence when Dolores Buchanan and Larry Peaches were killed.

According to Cleveland, Drane didn't know Bradley was in the house at the time.

Drane's defense attorney, public defender Rodney Barnes, told The State Journal as jurors deliberated the jury might have trouble believing two witnesses " Fisher and Bradley " who are in jail themselves for other offenses.

But the jury returned a guilty verdict. Drane asked to be transported back to the Franklin County Regional Jail while jurors deliberated on his sentence.

Drane is set to be sentenced at 1 p.m. today.

He could get life with an additional 30 years on four charges of which he was convicted " murder, attempted murder and two counts of wanton endangerment stemming from the Louisville nightclub incident.

In all likelihood, prosecutors said, Drane will never serve time in Kentucky.

He is currently serving 180 years in Indiana for the 2002 double murder of Dolores Buchanan and Peaches, as well as an additional 85 for the unrelated 2002 rape and murder of Tamarra Taylor, 25, of Gary, Ind.

After he is sentenced, Drane will be returned to a state prison in Michigan City, Ind., where he will serve his 265-year sentences.

U.S. Marshals caught Drane in 2004 in a Nashville, Tenn., apartment complex after receiving a tip from someone who saw Drane featured on "America's Most Wanted" as part of the top 15 most wanted list.
Drane was acquitted of the 1997 murder of an Indiana man.

hothead, there's a couple of movies about that idea. As long as Kurt Russell or Kevin Costner don't get convicted of something, 'it...could...work.'

Also, i believe the late George Carlin came up with a way to pay for it too, check out one of his skits.

do you mean that island would be different than the world some of our kids live in now???

Yes, you are right. We would need two islands.

There would have to be a separate island for men and women. Otherwise they would breed like rabbits and there would be innocent children stuck on an island with a bunch of sickos as parents.

Why didn't he get the death penalty? He killed somebody, fit the bill.. Anyhow, I believe killing them is letting them off way too easy. Our prison system is too nice. If there wouldn't be the inmate violence to deal with, it wouldn't be a bad place to be. The option of parole often lets these people out early. So what they get 100s of years in sentences. It's often reduced later on, somebody decides parole is possible after all, there are always options.... Well, it's no wonder that prison doesn't scare these people. Heck, even death row doesn't scare them. It takes forever to put them to death with all the appeals and such.

For people like this guy, who killed over and over again, there should be a special place. Some island they can't escape from. Just drop them off from a plane and let them deal with the elements, finding food, with others of their kind... let them take care of each other. Why should we pay for their care?

big dif between murdering an innocent baby and extinguishing a fire that burns normal society. this piece of crap needs to be taken out and shot like the dog he is. i beleive in HUMAN rights, this guy is not in my species. guess its easy to say that let him live when it wasnt your mother or son that he killed or your daughter that he raped. true justice would allow the vitims family to choose his sentence. after all, they will be the ones that deal with this a$@holes legacy every minute of every day for the rest of their lives

I'd like to believe that an individual that is CONVICTED of 2 or more seperate incidents involving murder should have ZERO right to any appeals and expedited through the capital punishment process. Not sure what Indiana's law is, but I'm of the opinion, if our state lawmakers pass a bill that included such language, it would serve / set a good example for the country.

At the very least, the punishment should fit the crimes. 4 seperate murders, one alleged w/acquital, and a rape, yeah, your right anti-capital-punishment-union-for-a-give-me-another-chance-and-never-hold-me-accountable-for-my-actions-America (ACPUFAGMACANHMAFMAA for short), he can be rehabilitated. When you get done with him, come by my house and teach my dog not to 'go' in the house.

Stick to the stuff you can change. OR, let this convict out near his cousins' neighborhood (if any of them are still alive), 'with a big ribbon on his head,' a name tag, and let the punishment police regulate. It is almost Christmas time.
