A fresh-cut pine tree delivered to the Capitol on Tuesday will serve as the official state Christmas Tree. A tree on the Capitol grounds had previously been used for more than a decade. Valeria Cummings, spokeswoman for the Finance and Administration Cabinet, said winds, storms and vandals damaged it. "Its life as a holiday tree is over," she said. Rodney Simpson, electric superintendent for the Frankfort Plant Board, said he helped transport the 40-foot tree from Lexington to the Capitol. It was cut near the Beaver Creek neighborhood on Man O' War Boulevard. Jill Midkiff, spokeswoman for Gov. Steve Beshear, said the tree is a Norway Spruce and was donated by Oscar Frye, a resident of Lexington. It's about 30 years old, she said, and had to be removed because it was growing into his foundation. The Frankfort Plant Board used a crane to get the tree on and off a trailer. Cummings said the tree was harvested at no cost to the state and will be unveiled in a lighting ceremony on Dec. 6. The tree will be decorated with light-emitting diodes, which are 80 to 90 percent more efficient than incandescent lights, Cummings said. "It's part of our Green initiative," she said. Other holiday decorations on Dec. 6 will include garlands and poinsettias in the Rotunda and Mezzanine. Comments
