A Gallatin County man was arrested Thursday afternoon after being involved in two separate vehicle crashes in Frankfort.

Mark S. Stevens, 48, of Sparta, was charged with two felony counts of second-degree assault. He was also arrested for DUI, leaving the scene of an accident and driving on a suspended license.

He was taken to the Franklin County Regional Jail.

The first crash - a hit-and-run - occurred at 3:53 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 127 and U.S. 60, according to Frankfort Police Maj. Fred Deaton.

City police officers were responding to that wreck when they were notified of another injury crash at the intersection of U.S. 127 and Devil's Hollow Road.

One person injured in each wreck was taken by Frankfort Fire and EMS to Frankfort Regional Medical Center for treatment. Injured were Elizabeth Byrd, 35, of Frankfort, who was in the crash at U.S. 127 and U.S. 60; and Mark Girkey, 47, of Frankfort.

In the first wreck, "Witnesses indicated that a black pickup truck approached the light, struck a vehicle which was stopped at the traffic signal and pushed it into a third vehicle," Deaton said.

"The driver of the black pickup then backed his truck, pulled around the other two vehicles and fled the scene in a northbound direction.

"A witness followed the perpetrator and reported him traveling ahigh rate of speed to the Devil's Hollow intersection where he allegedly ran the red light and struck a vehicle at that intersection, who was making a left turn into U. S.
127.This vehicle was flipped from the roadway into an adjacent field."
Stevens' vehicle stopped in a ditch, Deaton said.

Battalion Chief Dan Shouse said the injuries were not life-threatening.

Thank you, Thumper22, for your concern.Other than some minor back and arm injuries, they are fine. Wish I could say the same for the car! Also, I would like to thank the witnesses, who reported the accident and especially the one who followed the driver, to the next accident. you all deserve a big "hug" of thanks! God bless.

I hate to think how many more vehicles he would have hit and how many more people he could have injured if he hadn't wrecked himself.

Kentuckyblonde I am sorry to hear that it was your family and pray that they are okay. How he could be so cold I will never understand. I hope he gets some serious time for his stupidity.

How can you run from an accident knowing you have hurt someone? Does he not value human life.

The first accident, that was at Rt 60 and 127, involved a family of 5. Three children were in the back seat of of the 2003 Ford Focus. It really kills me that someone could be so cold, as to hit a family, and run like an idiot, not knowing or caring if anyone was hurt. I know--they were my son, his wife, and my grandchildren. I have photos of the damage done to the car,but you can't get pictures of the terror that they had to feel and go thru. I wish people would just "think" before they drive.

That's another unanimous vote for the Franklin County grand jury!!! File this one in the "stupidity" folder, please.

Talk about some bad luck...run from one wreck you stupidly caused, only to cause another one, and from the looks of it, a worse one at that! What an idiot. Hope everyone involved by this idiot's actions are okay. I turn left from that light everyday, so it's scary to think it could've been me.
