DJs protest proposed increases
Local disc jockeys for Froggy 104.9 FM and STAR 103.7 FM will go off the air today in protest against proposed royalty increases.

Steve Sullivan, promotions director for STAR 10.37 FM, said all on-air talent will be organizing a petition drive from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. today. A tent and table will be set up outside the station at 115 W. Main St
Mayor Gippy Graham will also present a proclamation supporting "Keep Local Radio Free Day," Sullivan said.

The DJs will ask members of the public to sign petitions against HR 848, a bill in the U.S. House that would impose additional royalties on radio stations. Sullivan said they are also seeking support for HCR 49 that urges against imposing any new fees.

If the fees are implemented, Sullivan said it could cause radio stations to cut jobs or go off the air entirely
In between songs, voice-over artists will read statements explaining why no DJs are on the air today, Sullivan said.

ehh...LOCAL...?
They fired one of our local dj's Stacey Brothwell without notice.

Most of the programming on those stations is crap from national syndicated shows...nothing LOCAL about the local station. And who came up with the idiotic " froggy" name anyway.

There are far too many broadcast stations in one community, all across America. Like any other business if the return on investment does not warrant additional investments or is not achieving the need ROI, then something has to give.

In markets, if there are any now days, where there is a dominate station there still exist, on the scene reporting and personality Disk Jockeys. When was the last time you heard anything like that on today, ROBOTIC, JUKEBOXES? Part time DJ's.

Modern radio is more about stockholders return than offering quality on the air radio people, with a understandable speaking delivery.

Jim Anderson Stivers

(FYI. . . In 1954 Go Go Stivers played the first rock and role record on WFKY-AM. Our tiny 250 Watt station, that used to be the best radio station by a dam sight was our only radio station, so it prospered financially.

1954 was when disk jockeys actually had turntables and no computer selected music. Each person, within a different taste, picked the songs from 45' rpm records and yes, ALBUM CUTS. For this old JOCK Soul and Motown were part of my rock and role taste.

Why did I do this?

DJs protest proposed increases... Everything is going up unemplyment, gas, utilities, and now Radio adds if this passes. The song artists are lucky we want to listen to their music. It was their choice to enter in the to entertainment business. If the artist need more cash go on tour (Micheal Jackson). What ever happened to volume sales. Now adays lets just sale something make a killing on the one sale and not worry about making another sale until next month.
