A man accused of injuring two people in two separate accidents has been indicted by the Franklin County grand jury on charges of assault and driving under the influence among other charges. According to the indictment, Mark Stacy Stevens, 48 of Sparta, was driving his 1998 Chevy pickup on Feb. 26 when he struck a vehicle driven by Elizabeth Byrd at the intersection of U.S. 60 and U.S. 127. Commonwealth's Attorney Larry Cleveland said Stevens fled the scene and continued driving on the East-West Connector. He allegedly t-boned a 1994 pickup driven by Mark Girkey as it was turning at Devil's Hollow Road, Cleveland said. Byrd and Girkey suffered serious physical injuries as a result of the accident, Cleveland said. "They are both still in a great deal of pain and discomfort although this happened a month ago," he said. Stevens was indicted Wednesday on charges of second-degree assault, leaving the scene of an injury accident, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol (aggravated) and operating a motor vehicle on a suspended or revoked license. Stevens has four previous convictions for DUI offenses from Boone, Carroll and Trimble counties between 1999 and 2005.
