When it rains, trash cans at Thorn Hill Community Education Building collect water from a leaky roof.
The former schoolhouse is home for the Frankfort/Franklin County Community Education Center, which provides adult education, community education and out-of-school child care. Relief arrived today in the form of a check for $237,500, earmarked by the federal Housing and Urban Development Cabinet and presented by U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler. In a statement by Chandler’s office, the congressman praised the work of Thorn Hill. “I am glad I was able to help Thorn Hill in its mission to promote lifelong learning in Central Kentucky - from helping adults get their GED, to tutoring students, to providing enriching cultural opportunities for all.” Tom Utterback, chairman of the Center’s Board of Directors, says the roof has been leaking badly for a long time. “We had patched it over and over again,” says Utterback. He’s hopeful the money will help make the building “water-tight” and allow for other improvements. Center Director Mike Rosenstein couldn’t be happier about getting funds for repairing Thorn Hill. “This is an historic day in the life of a 70-year building that is now in the 25th year of its second career serving the citizens of Frankfort and Franklin County,” Rosenstein said. “On behalf of the faculty and staff here, we are grateful to the congressman and assure him we will be good stewards.” Franklin County Judge-Executive Ted Collins, Frankfort Mayor Gippy Graham, and other county and city officials and community leaders attended today’s presentation and reception at the school.
