Unemployment rate rises
Franklin County's unemployment rate for March is up to 8.9 percent, a two-tenths jump from February.
A report released Tuesday by the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training says counties' unemployment rates in March ranged from 7.4 percent in Fayette County to 18.1 percent in Menifee County.

The statewide unemployment rate was 10.3 percent in March, an increase from 9.2 percent in February.

Frankfort Middle/High seeks parents
Frankfort Middle/High School is seeking parent representatives for the school's council for the 2009-10 school year.

Parents of current sixth-graders at Second Street School are also eligible to participate in nomination. Applications will be left at SSS and FMHS.

Nominations are due by Tuesday. Election takes place beginning at 8 a.m. at the school and ending at 6 p.m. Thursday during the school's academic showcase. Ballots can be picked up at FMHS.

Fiscal Court to hear swine flu report
Fiscal Court meets at 4 p.m. Thursday in the county judge's conference room on the third floor of the Courthouse Annex.

The agenda includes a work session to discuss the 2009-10 budget and health insurance.

Fiscal Court will also hear a brief update on swine flu and what the Franklin County Health Department is doing.

Lakeview gets new playground

Franklin County Fiscal Court will have a ribbon cutting for new playground equipment 10 a.m. Friday at Lakeview Park and the public is invited.

A $25,000 grant from Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation provided funding for replacing the playground equipment.

In 1991 Fiscal Court purchased Lakeview Park, which has more than 100,000 visitors a year, according to county officials.

Lowe's and its foundation contributed more than $25 million in 2008 to support community and education projects in the U.S. and Canada. Lowe's also encourages volunteerism through the Lowe's Heroes program, a companywide employee volunteer initiative.

May Friendship Day is Friday
May Friendship Day, sponsored by Franklin County Church Women United, is set for Friday, 10 a.m.-noon at First Presbyterian Church, West Main Street. The theme this year is "Building on Our Stories" based on Joshua 4:1-9.

Refreshments will be served and childcare provided. All women are invited.

Art exhibit at Serafini
Amina Meade-Ibrihim, a student in the Kentucky State University art area, will present her Senior Art Exhibit at Serafini Restaurant on Friday, 5-8 p.m. This one-day only exhibit will feature paintings, photography and ceramics.

Her photographs and paintings are primarily portraiture based. She was featured in the 2009 Frankfort Showcase and was recognized as the Outstanding Studio Art Major 2008-09.

Meade-Ibrihim has worked with elementary and middle school students in the KSU PACT summer program and with 4-H groups in Milwaukee and Black River Falls, Wisc., in art and nature programs.
