Commission to review budget
The City Commission meets at City Hall in special session Monday at 5 p.m. to discuss the proposed 2009-10 budget. There will be no action taken.


Charity Chix with Stix meets Monday
Charity Chix with Stix meets 6:30 p.m. Monday at Thorn Hill Education Center.
Bring knitting needles, crochet hooks or quilting needles and yarn or material. Project and charity ideas will be shared.

Taylor Branch Road closing for work
Taylor Branch Road will be closed for bridge replacement Monday at 1170 Taylor Branch Road until further notice.

Streets closing for repairs
The following roads will be closed beginning Monday:
>Taylor Avenue between Buttimer Hill and Devils Hollow Road for slide repairs
>Dry Ridge Road between U.S. 421 and O’Nan’s Bend Road for resurfacing
>Guist Road between U.S. 421 and the Henry County line for resurfacing
>Hanly Lane between the Woodford County line and Galbraith road for resurfacing

Officer memorial Monday
On Monday the Fraternal Order of Police will conduct the Annual Police Officer’s Memorial service at noon at the Kentucky History Center.
The ceremony will proceed to the Old Capitol grounds at approximately 12:45 p.m. During this time traffic will be restricted on Ann Street and the Old Capitol lanes of Broadway.
No parking will be permitted there until the conclusion of the ceremony.

UK alumni plan game-watch
Franklin County University of Kentucky Alumni Club is holding a baseball watching party for the UK vs. Auburn game Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Attendees meet at the entrance of Cliff Hagan Stadium at 6:15 p.m. in Lexington
Members, family and friends are invited. The cost is $5 per ticket.

Westridge accepting parent nominations
Westridge Elementary School is accepting nominations for school council parent representatives for the 2009-2010 school year.
All parents/legal guardians interested in running must submit a nomination form to the school principal by Friday.
The election is May 15 from 7:15 a.m-7:30 p.m. at the school.  Two parents will be elected.

Liberty Hall seeks volunteers
Liberty Hall Historic Site, 202 Wilkinson St. is seeking volunteer gardeners to join the “Planting of the Annuals” Tuesday (rain date Wednesday). 
The garden committee needs the public’s assistance to plant annual flowers and herbs throughout the extensive gardens at Liberty Hall and the Orlando Brown House. 
Volunteers should bring gardening gloves and trowels. Planting will begin at 10 a.m. and continue until the work is done. Any teens or adults interested in helping with the “Planting of the Annuals” should contact Jennifer L. Koach by e-mail at educator@libertyhall.org or call 227-2560.

PTSA elections at Elkhorn Middle
The Elkhorn Middle School PTSA is accepting nominations for the 2009-2010 school year. 
If interested in holding an office and being a decision maker in the school, submit a letter of interest for the position. Letters may be submitted by e-mail to sarahkentwhit@bellsouth.net or to the office at EMS, attention “PTSA Elections,” 1060 E. Main St., Frankfort, KY 40601.

Parent elections May 11
Elkhorn Middle School PTSA will hold the election for a parent member of the school’s SBDM council on May 11 at the school.
The election hours will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Recycle drop off Monday and Tuesday
Good Shepherd School students will sponsor a recycle drop-off collecting used inkjets, laser jets and cell phones Monday and Tuesday from 7 a.m.-3 p.m.
Items may be left on the front porch of the school and students will send them to be recycled. GSS library accepts these items all year.

Pancake breakfast Saturday
Frankfort High Athletic Association is holding an “All you can eat pancake breakfast” Saturday from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the school’s Cheryl V. Johnson Café.
The cost is $5 and includes pancakes, bacon and a drink.
Enter from Adell Place alley on the backside of the school. All proceeds go to FHS athletics.

YMCA registering for summer camp
The YMCA is currently registering for summer day camp and specialty camps.
Day camp offers activities consisting of indoor and outdoor physical recreational games, weekly field trips, arts and crafts projects, swimming and more.
Trips are planned to the Salato Wildlife reserve, Gattitown, Falling Springs and others.
Summer specialty camps are individually themed weeks designed to teach or increase skill level and include tennis, swimming, horse and nature, drama, art, community service and cheerleading.

County schools to approve calendar
Franklin County Board of Education meets 7 p.m. Monday at Central Office, 916 E. Main St.
Agenda items include approving the calendar for the 2009-10 school year, discussing a proposed board meeting schedule, approving a freeze on field trips outside of the district, approving a revised disaster day request and approving a state audit contract.

Poker run set, veterans’ reunion set
A poker run to raise funds for the Kentucky All Veterans Reunion is set for 10 a.m. Saturday beginning at American Legion Post 7, 164 Versailles Road.
The run will end at the Healing Field in Lawrenceburg around noon. Cost is $20 per hand. Door prizes, first, second and worst hand will be awarded. For more information call Scott Harper at (502) 510-2245 or Kurt Weekley at 352-0125.
The reunion is set for May 15-17 at the Capital Plaza.
The event will recognize veterans of all wars and includes a candlelight service May 15 at 8 p.m. as well as ceremonies, speakers, music, food and vendors with T-shirts and commemorative pins.

Children’s mental health day Thursday
Kentucky Partnership for Families and Children Inc. is celebrating Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day Thursday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
The event – at 207 Holmes St. – is free to the public and will feature activities for kids, information about children’s mental health for parents and caregivers and motivational comments from youth and parents across the state.
Hot dogs and drinks will be available to the first 200 people and green ribbons will be distributed.
Starbucks in Parkside will also give a free small coffee to every customer who comes in Thursday wearing a green ribbon in observance of the day.

Carriers’ food drive Saturday
The Letter Carriers’ Annual Food Drive is set for Saturday. It is the largest one-day drive in the nation and last year a record 73.1 million pounds of food were collected.  Locally, collections go to the Frankfort/Franklin County Emergency Food Pantry.
Postal patrons are asked to place canned food items on, near or in mailboxes before carriers arrive. No perishable items, please. The carriers will then bring the contributions to the post office and they will be distributed.

Ryder Stevens speaking
“Peace and Reconciliation,” an inspirational talk by Ryder Stevens, will be presented at First Church of Christ, Scientist, 121 East Todd St., Thursday at 7 p.m.
Stevens, a practitioner of Christian Science healing, retired as an Army chaplain after spending 23 years on active duty, attaining the rank of colonel. He served as pastor for protestant congregations and counseled soldiers and their spouses about relationships and marriage.
At a Joint Command in Europe, Ryder taught the concepts of “Free Exercise of Religion” and “Freedom of Religion as a Human Right” in countries of the former Soviet Block. His work with military organizations of Sub-Sahara Africa played a part in the founding of a Humanitarian/Peace Keeping Force for the region. 
In the late 1990s he helped to design the “Army Values Week, ” a concept that the entire Army later adopted.
The talk is free and open to the public.

Equestrian Games director  to give speech
Mary Wathen, Director of Community Relations and Protocol for the Altech 2010 World Equestrian Games will be speaking at 2 p.m. Friday at the Franklin County Extension Office, 101 Lakeview Court.
Anyone who is interested in the Games and how Frankfort can prepare for the visitors is invited. The Garden Club of Frankfort, which is also announcing the second annual Living in History tour for May 29-30, sponsors the event. The proceeds from these annual tours are directed toward beautification projects that will enhance the city’s appeal to visitors and its own citizens.
Fit Time plans fundraiser
Crop for a Cure to benefit American Cancer Society is set for 1-7 p.m. Saturday at Fit-Time for Women, Brighton Park.
The cost is $25; that includes refreshments, dinner, make and takes and door prizes. Call Dawn to register (502) 682-5081. All proceeds benefit Frankfort Relay for Life/American Cancer Society.
Bring supplies.

Jaycees seeking survivors
The Frankfort Jaycees are looking for those who are survivors of cancer to be honored at upcoming Relay for Life events. If you, a family member or friend have survived cancer, contact the Jaycees; invitations and information on the Survivors Dinner and activities can be mailed or e-mailed.

Be kind to animals this week
“Be Kind to Animals Week” continues through Saturday. In honor of the week, L.I.F.E. House For Animals suggests the following ways to show appreciation for animals:
>Report any suspected abuse or neglect.
>Commit to adopting a pet from an animal shelter/rescue.
>Donate to or volunteer at the Animal Shelter.
>Spay or neuter pets and encourage friends and family to do the same.
>Spend quality time with pets.
>Make sure pets have an ID tag or Microchip.

Microchipping for pets May 30
Commonwealth Credit Union and L.I.F.E. House For Animals are teaming up again to promote microchip identification for cats and dogs.
“Love Your Pet Day” is set for 9 a.m.-noon May 30 at the Commonwealth Credit Union’s Louisville Road Branch.
Between now and May 26, microchips can be purchased at any Commonwealth Credit Union Frankfort branch.   Drs. Gina Yeargan, Beavin Animal Hospital of Frankfort and Denis G. King, Frankfort Animal Clinic will be on hand to perform the microchipping.
Pre-registration through May 26 is $20 per chip. Registration on the day of the event is $30 per chip.
Visit any one of the Frankfort Branches of CCU to purchase a microchip. Bring completed forms to Love Your Pet Day.  All dogs must be on leashes and cats need to be in carriers.

Road department to discuss issues
The Franklin County Road Committee meets 10:30 a.m. Friday at the road department to discuss road issues.
