A “significant” gas line break caused Kings Daughters Drive to be closed for several hours Tuesday.

Frankfort Police Maj. Fred Deaton said they received a report of a gas line break at about 9:30 a.m.

Lisa Smith, director of communications for Columbia Gas, said a contractor working for the city was digging and hit a 4-inch medium pressure plastic gas line.

She said no customers were without service and that no injuries were reported. An incident like this highlights the importance of calling 811 to identify underground utilities before digging, Smith said.

“Whether you are a contractor or a basic residential home owner wanting to put in a fence, it’s always important to call,” she said.
Smith said the repairs were expected to be complete Tuesday afternoon.

Wayne Dominick, communications coordinator for Franklin County Schools, said Western Hills High School and Bondurant Middle School, both located nearby, were not evacuated.

The people working there had absolutely no concern about the danger they put us in. Notice there was no mention of Bridgeport Elementary School. Where student were evacuated from their classrooms in the front of the school. Teachers and students were rotated from the cafeteria to the gym and outside. I work in one of the buildings in front of where they hit the gas line. We heard the load roar of the gas line, but the "men" working there ran when they hit it and did not tell anyone of the danger. WE locked our business and went out of the building. WE had to call the local fire department and police. Traffic was not stopped until 45 minutes after the break. WE were allowed back into the building after Columbia Gas of Kentucy swept our building. This company was also working outside of the guidelines. The call before you dig is very important and they just didn't do it. Way to go!!!
