A Virginia woman injured Tuesday in a rollover accident on Interstate 64 that killed her passenger remains in good condition.

Alice Justice, 70 of Hampton, Va., was driving a 2000 Dodge Van westbound when it left the road and went out of control, according to Kentucky State Police.

The van overturned in the median near mile point 59 at approximately 1 p.m. Tuesday. It’s unclear what caused Justice to lose control.

The passenger Patricia Mann, 63 of Virginia Beach, was ejected, according to a news release. She was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at Frankfort Regional Medical Center, according to police.

Franklin County Fire and EMS responded and the state police are investigating the accident. Justice was wearing her seat belt, according to police.

The accident occurred only a few hundred feet from where three white crosses commemorate the victims of a triple fatality in November 2000.

The crosses identify the victims as Jennifer Hornback, 21, Trenton Hornback, 2, and an unborn infant.

There was a second accident at 1:06 p.m. Tuesday, because of traffic congestion caused by the first rollover, according to police.

Alan R. Kopp, 46 of Charlestown, Ind., was driving a white 2000 Dodge pickup, eastbound on I-64 when he rear-ended a flatbed tractor-trailer carrying two large spools of cable, according to police.

Kopp was transported to the hospital where he was treated and released. He was also wearing a seat belt and the truck’s airbag deployed.

The pickup had severe damage to the bumper and engine compartment, while the tractor-trailer sustained only minor damage.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured, according to police.

Traffic on I-64 was backed-up for several miles Tuesday as a result of the wrecks.

It saddens me deeply to hear that another life has been lost on I64. It suprises me that there are not more fatalities on that road. As much as I have travelled I64 over the past several years I never see law enforcement patrolling the section Between the I75 interchange and Louisville in both directions, except on national holidays (and sometimes not even then). You do so law enforcement patrolling East of the I75 interchange up to about exit 110 with speed traps snaring unsuspecting drivers.
It is a darn shame that we are not being protected on this bust corridor that takes us out of town in both directions. I feel that we should demand that I64 be patrolled, letting drivers from all over the country who use that road, that when they come around here they need to obey the laws, wear their seatbelts and drive sanely. There are too many drivers who are on suicide missions out on our roads and we need to take back our streets and highways.
