A unique new event showcasing traditional building trades, the Preservation Rendezvous, will be Thursday through Saturday at Cove Spring Park and River View Park. The program is presented by the Preservation Trades Network and Timber Framers Guild in partnership with the Kentucky Heritage Council, the state historic preservation office, Frankfort/Franklin County Tourist Commission and the city of Frankfort. In conjunction with the rendezvous, two hands-on workshops are planned today through Wednesday at Cove Spring Park. Participants will learn how to cut a timber frame picnic shelter as well as square rule layout, cutting square rule joinery and using hand and power tools. The shelter will then be erected and roofed at River View Park. There will also be a log house workshop. The cost for each workshop is $225 per person and participation is open to the public. Thursday and Friday events are geared to registered participants and members of the Preservation Trades Network and Timber Framers Guild. The public is invited to “Welcome Frankfort Day” from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at River View Park. Activities will include an ax-throwing competition and demonstrations in traditional building skills such as stone carving, slate roofing, square rule joinery, blacksmithing, masonry and brick work, wood carving, log hewing and tool making. Children’s activities and a display of historic tools and tools for sale will also be featured. On-site camping for registered participants and families is available at Cove Spring Park.
