R.T. Brooks

Services for R.T. Brooks, 91 yrs., of Frankfort, will be conducted from Harrod Brothers Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 29, 2009. Rev. Chuck Ellestad will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Woodford Co. Visitation will be Sunday, June 28, 2009 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Harrod Brothers Funeral Home.

 

  He died Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at his residence following an illness.

A native of Shelby Co., he was born, December 17, 1917 and was a U.S. Army veteran of the 83rd Infantry. Mr. Brooks was a graduate of Frankfort High School and attended Eastern State Normal. In 1986, Mr. Brooks retired from National Distillers after forty-four years of employment. He was a lifetime member of both VFW Post 4075 and American Legion Post 7. R.T. was considered to be an outstanding athlete who loved participating in many sports. He was an avid golfing enthusiast who played skillfully into his nineties. He was blessed with an uncommon acute memory and enjoyed sharing his WWII military experiences with everyone. He participated in five major military campaigns including landing at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Brooks was a member of First Baptist Church. 

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty Jean Smith Brooks; sons, Bruce W. Brooks, Steve Brooks (Patty), both of Frankfort, and David Brooks (Shirley), Australia; a brother, Ronald C. Brooks (Jeri), Frankfort; nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

 He was the son of the late William Nance and Elizabeth H. Wilson Brooks. Mr. Brooks was also preceded in death by his son, Glenn Allen Brooks, brother, James H. “Buster” Brooks and sisters, Virginia K. Quire, Opal True and Jewell Jenkins.

 Pallbearers will be Patrick Brooks, John E. Brooks, Bruce W. Brooks II, John Presley, Beth Brooks, Brian H. Brooks, Jeff Brooks, Kenneth Harp and Michelle Wood.

Honorary bearers will be Tony Schiller, Verle T. “Jack” Smith, Raymond Harp, Doug Rhody, J.J. Hudnall and Lewis Lee.

Flowers are welcome or contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Brooks to Hospice of Bluegrass/Frankfort Office, 208 Steele St., Frankfort, Ky. 40601.

Military honors will be observed at the graveside by VFW Post 4075.
