Two up, two down

Coming out of the consolation bracket, Graviss McDonald’s won twice Thursday night to capture the Babe Ruth League baseball tournament at Charlie Figg Field.

McDonald’s defeated Farmers Bank 11-1 in the first game, then scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth and final inning in the second game to win 6-5 and claim the championship.

The first game was scoreless through two innings, but McDonald’s broke through for three runs in the third with singles by Jason Johnson and Landon Kays, walks to Daniel Banks and Bradley Bennett, and an error on a ball hit by J.P. Roberts.

Farmers Bank got a run back in the top of the fourth when Conner Brown led off with a single and Cody Hall was hit by a pitch.

Tyne Nickel hit into a fielder’s choice, forcing Brown out at third.

Hall stole third base and scored when Brandon Smither grounded out to short, making the score 3-1.

McDonald’s broke the game open in the fifth inning with eight runs. In the inning Kyle Scott hit a triple, Chris Adams doubled and singled, Kays and Bradley Bennett each hit a single, and Farmers Bank committed two errors.

The game ended as soon as the 11th run scored on the 10-run mercy rule, setting up the second and deciding game.

Roberts pitched a complete game for McDonald’s, giving up just three hits - singles to Collin Harris, Brown and Nickel. He struck out five batters.

McDonald’s hits were a triple by Scott, a single and double by Adams, two singles by Kays, and singles by Johnson, Roberts, Bennett and Matt Hecker.

Smither pitched into the fifth inning for Farmers Bank before being relieved by Chance Hudnall.

Farmers Bank came out in the second game and took a 5-0 lead, scoring two runs in the first inning and three more in the second.

In the first Dylan Boyd drew a walk and Brown was hit by a pitch. Cody Hall singled in Boyd for one run, and Nickel drove in Brown with a base hit. Smither and Hudnall also singled in the inning.

With two outs in the second Harris, Boyd and Brown hit back-to-back-to-back singles, scoring one run. Hall was hit by a pitch, loading the bases, and an error on a ball hit by Nickel allowed two runs to score, making the score 5-0.

McDonald’s bounced back quickly, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second.

Banks led off by drawing a walk, and he scored on a double by Adams. Kays followed with another double, this one scoring Adams, and Bennett reached on an error to put runners at first and second.

The runners advanced when Hecker grounded out to the pitcher, and a walk to Jacob Robinson loaded the bases. Scott singled in Kays to make the score 5-3.

McDonald’s got a run closer in the third. Banks hit a one-out single and Adams drew a walk. Kays hit into a fielder’s choice, forcing Banks out at third, but consecutive walks to Bennett and Hecker brought home McDonald’s fourth run.

The score stayed 5-4 until the bottom of the sixth inning. Scott led off with a single for McDonald’s. He stole second base, went to third on a balk and scored the tying run when Johnson grounded out to short.

Roberts and Banks both drew walks and advanced on a passed ball. Roberts was thrown out at home on a fielder’s choice hit by Adams, but runners were still at second and third, and Banks scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

Roberts started the game on the mound for McDonald’s and went 2/3 of an inning before being relieved by Adams who pitched the rest of the game.

Adams had eight strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Getting hits for McDonald’s were Scott with two singles, Adams and Kays each with a double, and Roberts and Banks each with a single.

Brown was Farmers Bank’s starting pitcher, and Smither, Mefford and Boyd all pitched in relief. Farmers Bank had eight hits – singles by Harris, Boyd, Brown, Hall, Nickel, Smither, Hudnall and Mefford.

Winners bracket final

Farmers Bank 8, CLS 4

Farmers Bank scored four runs in the fifth inning to pull away from CLS and into the championship game.

Getting hits for Farmers Bank were Collin Harris with a triple and double, Zack Banta with a single and double, Conner Brown and Cody Mefford each with a double, and Cody Hall with a single.

Tyne Nickel pitched a complete game, striking out seven batters in six innings.

Jordan Moore hit a double and single for CLS, and Nick Cumpston doubled. Devon Rowland, Matt Tincher and Cumpston pitched.

Consolation bracket final

McDonald’s 7, CLS 2

Kyle Scott hit a triple and single for McDonald’s, Daniel Banks hit a double and single, Bradley Bennett singled twice, and J.P. Roberts and Landon Kays each hit a double.

Jason Johnson pitched the first five innings for McDonald’s, giving up two hits and striking out five, and Roberts finished the game in relief.

Devon Rowland singled twice for CLS, and Jordan Moore had a base hit. Rowland was the starting pitcher and went five innings before Nick Cumpston came on in relief.

Consolation bracket

McDonald’s 13, Chenault & Hoge 6

McDonald’s eliminated Chenault & Hoge from the tournament with a 13-6 win Tuesday that put McDonald’s in the consolation bracket final.

Jason Johnson hit a triple, double and single for McDonald’s, J.P. Roberts hit a single and double, Kyle Scott and Jared Banta both hit two singles, Landon Kays hit a double, and Daniel Banks had a base hit.

Scott, Kays and Bradley Bennett pitched for McDonald’s.

Jordan Taylor and Taylor Oaken both singled for Chenault & Hoge. Marc Cook pitched.
