Wednesday’s telethon to benefit the Frankfort/Franklin County Community Education Center raised more than $11,000 in pledges. “It was a wonderful outpouring of support from the citizens of Franklin County,” said Mike Rosenstein, the center’s executive director. “It will make a huge difference to our community education program and to the citizens of Frankfort and Franklin County.” Joe Johnson, president of the Thorn Hill Learning Center Foundation and organizer of the telethon, says he’s pleased with the result, but it’s still a “drop in the bucket” compared to the facility’s needs. Rain overnight Wednesday leaked through the roof, he said, prompting staff to use a child’s swimming pool to collect the water. U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler presented Thorn Hill with a $237,000 check in April for roof repairs, but the project still faces approval and a bidding process. “Life is like a roller coaster,” Johnson said. “We were so up last night (Wednesday), then to go in this morning and see the roof about to fall in – it looked terrible.” Rosenstein said the staff is coping well with the leak. The roof can be patched, he said, but it could be several days before work begins. Thorn Hill faces a $60,000 hole after losing Kentucky State University as one of its main sponsors this summer because of tough financial times. KSU spokeswoman Felicia Lewis told The State Journal that the university will continue in-kind donations and could resume financial contributions when the economy improves. Rosenstein said the Learning Center Foundation plans to make the telethon an annual event.
