KSU opens with win over StillmanAugust 29, 2009

Kentucky State’s football team opened its season with a 24-15 victory over SIAC foe Stillman College Saturday at Alumni Stadium. KSU sophomore running back Shannon Frieson rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns as the Thorobreds used a grinding rushing attack to gain 230 yards on the ground. K-State also had 162 yards passing for 392 yards in total offense. Stillman gained 296 yards in total offense – 185 yards rushing and 111 yards passing. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Jerrell Noland started his first game for the Breds and completed 7-of-19 passes for 162 yards, which included a 5-yard scoring streak to tight end Jovan Washington. Frieson opened the scoring for KSU on a brilliant 33-yard run with 4:48 remaining in the first quarter, and he scored again on a 4-yard run late in the third quarter. The Thorobreds led 14-3 at halftime on Frieson’s first touchdown run and Noland’s TD pass. KSU freshman Cam Lee, a graduate of Western Hills, put K-State ahead 17-3 with a 34-yard field goal with 4:32 left in the third quarter. Lee also kicked the extra points after all three touchdowns. Jamaree Gordon caught two passes for 58 yards, and Lee averaged 38.2 yards on six punts. Cordell Key led the Kentucky State defense with 16 tackles, 11 solo, and Derrick Addai added six tackles with four solo. The Thorobreds will travel to Albany, Ga., this week to play the Albany State Golden Rams. Kickoff will be 7 p.m. Comments
