The long-awaited opening of the Grand Theatre is rapidly approaching, with the first 2009-10 season offering Friday, Sept. 25. The Platters and the Coasters are set to perform two shows that evening, at 7 and again at 9:30. Individual tickets priced at $45, $35 and $25 are now available at the ticket office, open 10 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays at 312 W. Main, phone 352-7469. The show’s sponsors are Art’s Electric and R.A. Williams Construction Company, Inc.; Farmers Bank, Harrod Concrete and Stone, and Stewart Home School are full season sponsors. The Platters and Coasters harken back to the dawn of the rock and roll era of the ‘50s. The Coasters’ first record “Down in Mexico” was recorded in the spring of 1956 and propelled the group into fame. Their first hit was followed by a double-sided million seller “Searching” and “Young Blood.” Two more big hits, “Yakety Yak” and “Charlie Brown” followed and from then on it was the sweet smell of success. The Coasters were the first vocal group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Jan. 21, 1987. They appeared in six major movies and have amassed more than 100 million record sales in their career. To this date, their act is one of the liveliest and funniest in show business. The Platters were formed in the early part of the 1950s. The original Platters group produced 10 songs that made Billboard’s list of the 500 greatest rock and roll hits of all time, including three in the top 50. They had 21 top-10 records, nine million-selling singles, five platinum albums and five No. 1 songs. Their hits include “Only You,” “The Magic Touch,” “Twilight Time,” “The Great Pretender” and many, many more. The Platters’ total record sales exceed 200 million, making them one of the top 25 selling artists of all time. They have appeared all over the world and remain one of the most sought after performing groups in the country. Response to the Grand’s recent open houses and season ticket sales has been overwhelming, with all available season tickets having been sold. Individual tickets for the remaining 12 shows will be available through the ticket office as well as on the Web site www.grandtheatrefrankfort.org beginning Tuesday. Check the Web site for the full season schedule. Several downtown businesses are offering discounts and specials to customers who show their Grand Theatre tickets. The Sullivan parking garage on West Main will be open for free parking. Citizens are also encouraged to volunteer at the Grand. As the theatre enters its first season, volunteers will staff all shows. Ticket takers, ushers and concession workers are some of the most critical spots to fill. Interested persons should contact Patti Porter at pwpky@fewpb.net or e-mail savethegrand@aol.com. Coming next: Tommy Emmanuel, Oct. 6. Tickets available beginning Tuesday. Comments
