Friday's Matchups

No. 5 Frankfort vs. Trimble Co.

at Sower Football Field

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.

Records: Frankfort (6-2, 3-0); Trimble Co. (3-5, 1-2)

Last week: Frankfort defeated Gallatin Co. 30-7; Trimble Co. lost to Eminence 24-20

FHS notes: Last week’s game was less than stellar, though the score shows otherwise. A late charge was all that saved the Panthers from an embarrassing loss. Friday’s game against a team that has allowed 1,354 yards on the ground this season – 3 more yards than the Raiders have gained – FHS should have no trouble scoring at will. That is, if the Panthers can hold onto the ball – something they have struggled with in recent games. And with yet another rainy Friday on its way, the weather will again be a central issue.

A look at Trimble Co.

Mascot: Raider

Class: 1A

Head coach: Chris Collins

Key players: Cameron Adamski, Michael Edens, Kyle Law, Skiler Alexander, Jordan Blanton

Last year’s record: 4-7 (lost to Beechwood 42-6 in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs)

Points scored: 177

Points allowed: 156

Notes: Former head coach Johnny Poynter and his unusual A-11 offense (which defies explanation) left town for Bourbon County and after hiring – then losing – a replacement, the Raiders went with Chris Collins from Atherton. The Radiers are running a modified Wing-T offense out of the shotgun. Cameron Adamski and Michael Edens lead the running attack. Adamski has carried the ball 88 times for 624 yards and has eight TDs. Edens has 90 carries for 502 yards and four TDs. The Raiders use a pair of quarterbacks: Skiler Alexander and Jordan Blanton. Neither are big threats to pass but can give fits to opposing defenses out of the Wing-T. Kyle Law on the defensive line will cause some trouble for the Panthers’ running attack. He leads the team with 98 tackles this season.

No. 10 Western Hills vs. North Oldham

at WHHS

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.

Radio: STAR 103.7 FM, pregame show starts at 7:10 p.m.

Records: Western Hills (5-3, 1-1); North Oldham (5-3, 1-1)

Last week: Western Hills lost to Henry Co. 14-7; North Oldham defeated Spencer Co. 28-0

WHHS notes: The Wolverines won four straight earlier this season but have dropped two of their last three. WHHS is hoping to make up for a lackluster showing against Henry County last week that was full of turnovers. A win over North Oldham will guarantee the Wolverines the second seed in the district while a loss puts them third – it will be the difference between playing their first playoff game at home or going on the road.

A look at North Oldham

Mascot: Mustang

Class: 3A

Head coach: Billy Martin

Key players: Zach Price, Jakob Manornorth, Austin Peterson, Ryan Anderson

Last year’s record: 10-2 (lost to Elizabethtown 42-28 in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs)

Points scored: 180

Points allowed: 143

Notes: After amassing a 3-0 district record last season, the Mustangs took a beating in their opener against Henry County but handed out a beating to Spencer County last week. NOHS is a running team with 2,110 yards on the ground this season. Fullback Zach Price leads the way with 98 carries for  617 yards and five TDs. Jakob Manornorth is right behind him with 51 carries for 410 yards and six TDs. Quarterback Austin Peterson will throw when the opportunity presents itself. Peterson is 23-of-64 assing this season for 485 yards and has four TD passes. He has also thrown five interceptions. Linebacker Ryan Anderson leads a tough defense with over 25 solo tackles and 66 assists.

Franklin Co. vs. Harrison Co.

at Benny Watkins Field

Kickoff: 7:30 p.m.

Records: Franklin Co. (1-7, 0-3); Harrison Co. (4-4, 2-0)

Last week: Franklin Co. lost to Pendleton Co. 14-8; Harrison Co. defeated Bourbon Co. 24-21

FCHS notes: With the playoffs no longer possible, the Flyers find themselves playing for pride the rest of this season. FCHS hasn’t played poorly throughout its last few games, but hiccups on defense and mistakes on offense have cost the Flyers dearly. Harrison County may be perfect in district play this season, but its lone weakness seems to be run defense. The Thorobreds have allowed 1,250 yards on the ground this season – more than double what they have gained. The Flyers’ speed on the outside could give Harrison County fits and set up FCHS for an upset win.

A look at Harrison Co.

Mascot: Thorobred

Class: 4A

Head coach: Mark Carroll

Key players: Josh Moss, Joe Korona, Malcolm Thomas

Last year’s record: 6-6 (lost to Lexington Catholic 52-13 in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs)

Points scored: 186

Points allowed: 150

Notes: The Thorobreds are fighting for a district title for the second straight season. Harrison County has already clinched a second seed in the district, but with a win over FCHS and another over Holmes next week, the Breds would be No. 1. The Thorobred offense leans heavily toward the pass led by quarterback Joe Korona. He has thrown for 830 yards this season on 74-of-152 passing. Korona has thrown for eight TDs along with four interceptions. Malcolm Thomas is Korona’s favorite target with 32 catches for 508 yards and seven TDs. Thomas also catches passes thrown by the other team. Thomas has four picks this season that he has returned for 177 yards and two touchdowns. Josh Moss leads the Breds’ running attack with 99 carries for 510 yards and six TDs.
