Jack Bradford Walters Jr., born August 24, 1920, son of Jack Bradford Walters Sr., and Grace Pauline Tichenor Walters died October 25, 2009 at Select Specialty Hospital of Good Samaritan Hospital, Lexington, KY. He was 89. Jack was born at home in Bridgeport, grew up in Frankfort, KY, and graduated from Frankfort High School in 1938. He enjoyed singing in the chorus and participated in the Kentucky All-State High School Chorus that year. As a youth he was one of the first Eagle Scouts in the area. He attended the University of Kentucky, played saxophone in the UK band and graduated in 1944 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. His first job in summer 1944 was with the Charlestown Ohio Roofing Company. He was drafted for World War II and completed Basic Infantry and Combat Infantry Training at Fort Knox, KY. He attended Officer Candidate School at Fort Belvior, VA and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Corp of Engineers. He was assigned to the Automotive and Diesel School at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO and qualified for Maintenance Echelons 1, 2, 3 and 4. He later acted as Assistant Director of Training. He served one year in Italy in Company A, 313 Combat Engineering Battalion where he was Assistant Company Commander with collateral responsibilities of Defense Counsel and Post Exchange Officer. He was recommended for promotion to 1st Lieutenant by the PX Commander but the war ended before this took effect. After discharge he returned to UK to work on his master’s degree. His education was interrupted by family illness and spent many years caring for his aunt, Eula Tichenor. He was appointed Commissioner of Public Works, but resigned to care for his mother. He was a member of V.F.W. Franklin County Post 4075, Knight Templar W. G. Simpson #472 and Hiram Lodge #4, Frankfort Chapter #3, Frankfort Council #5, and Frankfort Commandery #4. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Frankfort on St. Clair Street. For many years he also attended the Franklin County Senior Center and participated in the South Frankfort Neighborhood Organization. He was also commissioned a KY Colonel by Gov. Paul Patton on October 15, 1996. He was an avid fisherman, outdoorsman and nature enthusiastic. Jack will be missed by many friends in the diversified areas of his life. He is survived by his long-time friend and caregiver, Huguette Birkhead and two double third cousins, Helen Tichenor Montgomery, Shelbyville and Fred Cooper Tichenor, Perry Park plus numerous other relatives. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 pm at the Rogers Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 27th where Masonic services will be conducted by Hiram Lodge #4 F&AM. (The Lodge will open at 6:00 p.m.) The funeral will be at Rogers Funeral Home 10 am Wednesday, October 28th with graveside services and military honors at the Frankfort Cemetery. The Rev. Bob Karsner will officiate at the services. Bearers will be Forrest Cardwell, Jacob Coley, John Feamster, Sherman Landrum, Bill Jackson and Craig Sherwood Honorary bearers will be Rudy Davis, Jim Curless and the members of Hiram #4 and W.G. Simpson #472.
