Franklin County’s Jordan Parris and Jenny Hellmann made the most of thin competition on a muddy day at the State Library and Archives to win the County Cross Country Championships Wednesday. Parris won the boys 5,000-meter race with a time of 19 minutes, 29 seconds while FCHS’ Jason Shaw was second at 19:46.33 and Western Hills’ Grant Hughes finished third with a time of 20:04.31. “The top three guys weren’t going to run, so I knew I could probably win,” Parris said. “I knew my time wouldn’t be as good as it has been. I just wanted to keep going strong.” Some of the top runners in the boys division were out with injuries including WHHS’ Daniel Thurston and Brandon Pulliam, and FCHS’ Robert Sandlin also sat out. “They’ll be running at the region,” WHHS coach Adam Schaffner said about his injured runners, “but I don’t know how much running they’ll do between now and then.” As for Sandlin, his status is still unclear. “He may have an injury,” FCHS coach Kelly Lewis said. “We’re not really sure. He’s going to go to the doctor and see what’s wrong. Hopefully it’s nothing big.” On the girls side, Hellmann won with a time of 22:27.46 over teammate Brooke Stigers, who finished second in 24:06.54. Western Hills’ Kory Bradley was third at 24:54.50. “I felt pretty good,” Hellmann said. “I knew I wouldn’t get my best time because it was so muddy. I’m happy with it. “I feel like I am in pretty good shape – at least as good as I am going to get,” she added. “I am pretty confident for regionals.” Both boys and girls teams for the Wolverines found themselves shorthanded Wednesday. But Schaffner was happy with his team’s performance. “Since we only had four runners out of the eight on the guys side, we ran well,” Shaffner said. “Considering the conditions, they ran really well. On the girls side we had one of three and (Bradley) probably ran one of her better races for the year considering how hilly and muddy it was out here.” Lewis also approved of her teams’ races, with most of her runners in the competition. “I think working hard in practice has paid off,” Lewis said. “I think everyone is doing really well and doing the best as can be expected.” The regional meet at the Archives is only nine days away – Saturday, Nov. 7 – and with the weather being as wet as it has been all season, Wednesday’s race was yet another chance for local runners to “practice” for the real thing. “It will definitely get us used to running in it,” Schaffner said about the muddy conditions. “It will help to run on this course and in the mud just in case it is like this for region. It may give us a little advantage.” Parris agrees that running on the course all season will be advantageous for the Flyers and himself. “Right now I am 17th or 15th, but we ran here a couple of weeks ago with a bunch of the region teams and I got ninth,” Parris said. “So I feel pretty good about this course. We practice here everyday almost. We have a pretty good advantage, so hopefully I can make it to state along with our team. “We’ve been fifth all year, but since we have the advantage, maybe we can get fourth or so.” The meet also included a boys and girls middle school and elementary race. Cory Johnson from Bondurant Middle won the boys middle school 3,000-meter race with a time of 11:41.07 while Bradley Bennett from Frankfort Christian was second at 12:04.79. Bondurant Middle won the middle school boys team title with Elkhorn Middle coming in second and Good Shepherd in third. On the girls side, BMS’ Harper Jones was first running a 12:59.78 on the 3,000 meter course. Jodi Llanora from Good Shepherd finished second with a time of 13:51.14. Bondurant won the girls middle school team title over Elkhorn Middle. Elkhorn’s Jackson Lewis won the boys elementary school 1,500-meter race with a time of 6:03.50 over TFCA’s Clayton Bennett with a time of 6:06.66. Elkhorn Middle won the team title with TFCA in second and Frankfort Middle in third. Bondurant won the girls elementary team title led by first-place finisher Ashley Lawhorn (6:20.03). TFCA’s Rebecca Cook was second with a time of 6:36.33. All of the team scores as well as individual times are listed below by division. High School Boys 5K 1. Jordan Parris FCHS 19:29.01, 2.
