No. 4 Frankfort vs. Bishop Brossartat Sower Football Field Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. Records: Frankfort (7-3, 4-0); Bishop Brossart (5-5, 2-3) Last week: Frankfort lost to Danville 20-9; Bishop Brossart lost to Bethel Tate, Ohio 20-0 FHS notes: After a disappointing loss to Danville last week, the Panthers will be more than happy to get down to the games that matter – the playoffs. With the No. 1 seed, FHS will face the bottom seed of District 3, Bishop Brossart. With a dry forecast for Friday, the Panthers should be running the ball like they always do, especially with quarterback Dylan Quinn staying on the sidelines due to a concussion he suffered against Danville. Georan Cardwell will take over at QB. Marcus Washington is also hampered by a recurring shoulder injury but should play Friday night. If the Panthers win, they will host the winner of the Gallatin County-Bellevue game next week.
A look at Bishop Brossart Mascot: Mustang Class: 1A Head coach: Matt Reinhart Key players: Chris Bowman, Jesse Orth, Michael Whitford, John Schack Last year’s record: 0-10 (did not make playoffs) Points scored: 205 Points allowed: 228 Notes: In only their third season as a varsity program, the Mustangs are making their state playoff debut. Brossart was 0-10 in its previous two seasons and made the leap to .500 this season. Chris Bowman leads the Mustangs’ running attack with 920 yards on 161 carries and 10 touchdowns. Quarterback Jesse Orth also carries some of the offensive load passing for 644 yards this season. His favorite target is Michael Whitford who has caught 17 passes this season for 265 yards and five touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker John Schack leads the team with 41 tackles while defensive back Luke Dishar leads the team with three interceptions.
No. 7 Western Hills vs. Shawneeat WHHS Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. Radio: Froggy 104.9 FM, pregame show starts at 7:10 p.m. Records: Western Hills (7-3, 2-1); Shawnee (4-6, 1-2) *(6-4, 2-1) Last week: Western Hills defeated Franklin Co. 43-14; Shawnee defeated Bethlehem 20-14 WHHS notes: The Wolverines are riding as high as they have ever been coming off last week’s rout of cross-town rival Franlin County and posting the best regular season record in school history. But this week, WHHS finds out that it will not be going for revenge against Elizabethtown for last year’s playoff beatdown, but instead will play former second-seeded Shawnee – the Golden Eagles fell to third place in District 3 after forfeiting two games. With dry weather in the forecast, the Wolverines will be able to use all their offensive weapons from quarterback Dylan Curry’s arm to the powerful running of Justin Wright. Though Shawnee has speed, its lack of offensive variety should play into the hands of WHHS’ tough defense.
A look at Shawnee Mascot: Golden Eagles Class: 3A Head coach: Ravon Patterson Key players: Joe Slaughter, Michael Carr, Quinton Gray, Willie Swinney Last year’s record: 6-5 (lost to Central 40-6 in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs) Points scored: 188 (*251) Points allowed: 228 (*254) Notes: Last season, the Golden Eagles posted their first winning season in 19 years, but graduation took many of the team’s star players. Shawnee would have had a winning season this time around if it wasn’t for a pair of forfeits after the regular season due to two players being declared ineligible. Quarterback Joe Slaughter has taken over where he left off last season when he rushed for 600 yards as a running back. He is the center of the Shawnee offense and is the workhorse of the team – Slaughter is also the team’s punter and kicker and plays strong safety. When Slaughter does throw, the ball usually finds its way into the hands of senior Michael Carr. On the defensive side, the Golden Eagles return two key players in senior defensive back Quinton Gray and sophomore linebacker Willie Swinney. *before two administrative forfeits (Fort Knox and Moore) due to using ineligible players Comments
