The Capital City Community Band kicks off its 23rd season with a 5 p.m. concert Sunday, Nov. 15, called “Hammer Time.” The concert is one of the last events of the annual Candlelight Tour sponsored by Downtown Frankfort, Inc. and will be held in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church, 211 Washington St. Admission is $5 donation. Students may attend for free. The concert showcases one of the staples of the wind band library, Gustav Holst’s “Hammersmith Opus 52” as well as a CCCB premier of Gregory Fritze’s tuba solo, “Concerto for Tuba and Wind Ensemble” featuring former US Navy Band tubist and current CCCB member, Kelly Diamond, as soloist. Also featured in the concert are works by John Philip Sousa, Harry Alford and Daniel Kallman. Frankfort native Tom Brawner conducts the Capital City Community Band. The band been honored by being selected to perform concerts for the Kentucky Music Educators Association Convention and the Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Convention in Chicago in 2007. It has also been a featured ensemble at the Great American Brass Band Festival in Danville and is regarded by many as one of the finest community bands in the nation, having garnered high acclaim for programming and performances. The band has commissioned new works for band including Thomas Duffy’s Gnomon written for the dedication of the Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Monument and Unbridled Spirit, a piece composed by Kentucky native Brant Kerrick for the opening of the band’s Mid-West Convention concert. The Capital City Community Band is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization as established by the Internal Revenue Service and operates solely through the contributions of patrons and sponsorships garnered through working relationships with the business community. The band provides a complete concert schedule geared toward entertaining and educating the people of Frankfort. The concerts given by the band range from educational, student-geared ones to those directed toward expanding the current wind band library. While the organization operates with the primary intent of serving its community, it also strives to establish an identity in the international band world in order to further the role of the community-based band in the fabric of modern society while also bringing positive attention to the City of Frankfort. As with any volunteer arts organization, the band would not be able to maintain its presence in the community without the assistance of the corporate and private sectors through the donation of resources and capital funding.
