Kentucky State wrapped up the football season Saturday in Jackson, Tenn. with a dominant 26-7 win over Lane College.

The Thorobreds built a 19-0 lead in the first half against the Dragons and outgained their host on offense by more than 200 yards.

Senior running back Anthony Boykins finished his career on a high note, carrying the ball 23 times for 148 yards and a touchdown.

Backfield mate Shannon Frieson nearly cracked 100 yards on the night as well. Frieson went for 94 yards on 24 carries and scored the game’s final touchdown with 2:07 left in the fourth quarter.

Juwan Jones led all receivers with three receptions for 48 yards and a touchdown and quarterback Jerrell Noland completed 6-of-14 passes for 109 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

The win gives K-State a 6-5 overall record for the year, the Thorobreds’ first winning season since 2006. In the SIAC, Kentucky State finished sixth with a 4-5 conference record.

Against Lane, Kentucky State jumped ahead early and never looked back.

Linebacker Deshon Best recovered a fumble for the Thorobreds on the Lane 20 on the opening possession of the game, and Boykins needed only two rushing attempts to break the plane of the end zone.

A 9-yard run by Boykins put KSU ahead 6-0 just 1:16 into the game. Cam Lee’s extra point made it 7-0.

The Thorobreds finished the quarter with a score as well. Noland hit Jones with a 15-yard touchdown pass to complete an 8-play, 65-yard drive, which gave KSU a 13-0 advantage after one quarter of play.

The defense stepped up once more to start the second quarter as cornerback Grandson Brown snuffed out another Dragon drive by intercepting Lane quarterback Dwayne Cross and returning the ball 76 yards for a touchdown.

The two-point conversion failed, making the lead 19-0.

The Thorobreds went into halftime ahead 19-7 after Cross scored on a 1-yard plunge on the following offensive possession to complete a 70-yard drive.

Kentucky State shut out Lane in the second half as neither team scored in the third quarter.

Frieson closed out the game with a 4-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter as K-State drove the ball 95 yards on 14 plays.

Lane was held to 140 yards offense in the game, while Kentucky State rolled up 342 yards.

The Thorobreds also had a 3-1 edge in turnovers.
