Wildcats look for return of key players

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky coach Rich Brooks hopes to have running back Derrick Locke and receiver Randall Cobb back for a crucial game at Vanderbilt on Saturday.

Locke sat out with an injured knee and Cobb was out with a thumb injury during Kentucky’s 37-12 win over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday.

In another boost to the offense, quarterback Mike Hartline might be available to play against Vanderbilt.

Hartline has been injured for four weeks, ceding his starting spot to a triple threat offense that has included Cobb running a spread offense, true freshman Morgan Newton and backup Will Fidler.

Brooks said Sunday that if Hartline returns Saturday, he will factor in to the same style of offense, behind Newton — who would start — and in front of Fidler.

“We just have to see if he holds up or not in practice,” Brooks said. “As he gets more confidence, he’s getting better throwing the ball.”

Brooks said that Vanderbilt (2-8, 0-6 Southeastern Conference) is better than its record shows.

“They have a good defense, a sound offense, they move the ball well,” Brooks said. “Its going to be very difficult for us to score on them.”

Brooks said the Commodores defense has been tough all year, holding South Carolina to just 14 points and sacking Floridas Tim Tebow four times.

“Theyre very stingy,” Brooks said. “They have some very good and experienced players on that defense.”

A win against the Commodores would give Kentucky (5-4, 1-4) bowl eligibility for a fourth consecutive season.
