Adam Jones, left, and Ramsy Tandy were selected as All County Most Valuable Players.
Franklin County’s boys soccer team won its first regional championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the state tournament this season, an unprecedented accomplishment in the school’s history.
During their historic run, the Flyers pitched three shutouts and allowed more than one goal only once in six games. The return of a ball hawk to the back line played a key role in FCHS’ run.
Senior defender Adam Jones has been named the most valuable player for the 2009 State Journal all-county soccer team on the boys side.
For the girls, FCHS sophomore Ramsy Tandy was named most valuable player.
Jones, who was named KHSAA 2nd team all-state, returned from a leg injury that sidelined him for the final month of the regular season to help spur the Flyers’ postseason run. His physical style and cool play under duress frustrated opposing teams and instilled confidence in his teammates.
“Adam Jones is the most tenacious defensive player I have ever had the pleasure of coaching,” FCHS coach Zac Donnelly said. “His strong work ethic served as a great motivational example and raised the level of play of his teammates.
“His physical and determined style of play had a lot to do with the team’s success this year.”
Tandy served as the Lady Flyers’ versatile backbone, playing every position but goalkeeper and helping her team in a variety of ways.
The sophomore captain led Franklin County in assists with 14 and was tied for third on the team in scoring with eight goals.
“Whenever we were getting beat on a particular side or position on the field we moved Ramsy to stop the opposition’s attack,” FCHS coach Jamie Hoofnagle said.
“When we needed a goal to tie the game or needed to generate offense we moved her to the midfield or even to striker to create scoring opportunities for our team. She played nearly every minute of each game for us and was an integral part of our team’s success this season.”
The members of the all-county teams were selected by their respected coaches, and The State Journal sports staff selected the most valuable players.
