Thorobrettes fall to Northern Ky.

The Kentucky State women’s basketball team rallied in the final two minutes but fell short against Northern Kentucky, losing 66-62 Saturday in Highland Heights.


NKU (2-0) took a 66-55 lead with 1:50 left in the game, but a 3-pointer and layup by Jessica Vaughn pulled the Thorobrettes within six points at 66-60 with 59 seconds remaining.


KSU’s Latrice Watkins hit two free throws with 35 seconds left, making the score 66-62. Northern turned the ball over, but K-State missed two shots in the final seconds.


The Thorobrettes (0-2) placed four players in double figures – Watkins and Vaughn both scored 12 points, Stephanie Harper had 11 points, and Kiarra Morgan had 10.


Harper led KSU in rebounds with nine, and Watkins had eight.


Kentucky State shot 36.7 percent from the field. The Thorobrettes struggled from the free throw line, going 16-for-35 for 45.7 percent.


NKU, which also shot 36.7 percent from the field, was led by Casse Mogan with 17 points.


The Thorobrettes return home to play their first conference game of the season Tuesday at the Exum Center against Claflin.
