This year there’s more to Black Friday than shopping.

There’s basketball.

A lot of basketball.

The Mid-South Conference Challenge will take place Friday and Saturday at the Frankfort Convention Center with eight games each day.

All eight men’s basketball teams in the Mid-South will be competing, along with eight teams from Ohio, Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois and Alabama.

“We thought a basketball classic would be great for the people of Frankfort,” said Mid-South commissioner Mike Pollio. “If there are men whose wives are out shopping, this gives them something to do.”

Games start at 9 a.m. each day, and the final game each day is scheduled to begin at 9:15 p.m.

“To do that, we’ll have 10-minute halftimes,” Pollio said, “and there will be 10 minutes between games.” Teams will have a chance to warm up for their games during halftime of the preceding game.

The Mid-South teams in the Challenge are St. Catharine, Pikeville, West Virginia Tech, Rio Grande, Lindsey Wilson, the Cumberlands, Campbellsville and Georgetown.

The rest of the field consists of Ohio State-Marion, Ohio State-Mansfield, St. Francis (Fort Wayne, Ind.), Virginia Intermont (Bristol, Va.), IU Northwest (Gary, Ind.), Mid-Continent (Mayfield), Robert Morris (Chicago), and Talladega (Talladega, Ala.).
The Mid-South Conference is no stranger to Frankfort with its basketball and volleyball tournaments being played each year at the Convention Center.

“I think this can be a lot of help for the economy,” Pollio said. “Every person who comes in spends an average of $280. They eat in your restaurants, they stay in your hotels.”

And they’ll see a lot of competitive basketball.

Robert Morris, a national semifinalist last season, was the preseason No. 1 team in the nation in the NAIA Div. I coaches poll.
Georgetown was ranked No. 7 and the Cumberlands No. 14. Pikeville, Lindsey Wilson and Campbellsville all received votes, as did Mid-Continent.

Admission for the Challenge will be $10 per day for adults and $5 per day for children, and fans will be able to come and go during the day once they purchase a ticket.

“The Mid-South is probably the best basketball conference in the NAIA,” Pollio said. “We usually have three or four teams out of the 32 in the national tournament.

“I’m hoping Frankfort embraces this event and will come out and see really, really good basketball.”
