Dr. James A. Shepherd, Frankfort pastor and community leader, will be recognized Sunday by the First United Methodist Church.

Dr. Shepherd recently celebrated his 88th birthday, and the church will honor him for 66 years of ministry. He will preach both the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services.

Dr. Shepherd and his family came to Frankfort in 1962 when he was appointed as pastor at First United Methodist Church where he served for 10 years. Following that, he served for six years as superintendent of the Frankfort District. After 16 years of service in Frankfort, Dr. Shepherd served two other pastorates, Park United Methodist Church in Lexington and Versailles United Methodist Church.

He and wife, Rosalie, retired in Frankfort in 1991. He has been serving as minister in residence at the First United Methodist Church for the past four years. The Shepherds were married 57 years before Rosalie passed away in 2004.

Dr. Shepherd’s four children, Mary John, Ruth Ann, Phillip and Mark, will also be participants in the worship services.

All graduates of Frankfort High School, Mary John Dye is district superintendent for the Statesville District in the Western North Carolina Conference (Statesville, N.C.).

Phillip Shepherd and his wife, Audrey, live in Frankfort where he is a Franklin County Circuit judge.

Dr. Ruth Ann Shepherd works in maternal and child health for the state.

Mark Shepherd and his wife, Sande, live in Jeffersontown, where he is pastor of Jeffersontown UMC.

Shepherd also has six grandchildren and five great-grandsons.

A reception will follow the 11 a.m. service in Asbury Hall.

Congragulations Pastor Shepherd on your 66 years in the ministry. A former resident of Frankfort (25 years ago), I was a member of First Baptist Church Frankfort, and the late Rev. K. L. Moore was my Pastor. Frankfort is like a second home to me. I shall never forget and always be so ever greatful to the Frankfort community. It wasn't until a few years ago that I met Rev.Mark Shepherd of Jeffersontown United Methodist Church. I wasn't aware that he was your son til I read this article about you. As Rev. K. L. Moore would say "keep moving" and obviously are. May God's richest blessings continue to smile upon you and your family. Judith La Rone Perkins, Jeffersontown, Ky. 40299
