Civitan club selling Claxton Fruit Cake

The Frankfort Civitan Club is selling Claxton Fruit Cake.

Prices are 1 pound for $3.75, 2 pounds for $7.25, 3 pounds for $10.50 and 5 pounds in a decorative tin for $19.  To purchase a fruit cake contact JL Soyars at 223-0633. Profit from the sales supports the club’s local service projects.
 
Western Hills FFA selling flowers

Western Hills High School’s FFA is now pre-selling poinsettias until Monday. Those ordering poinsettias in advance will be able to pick up their plants Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. beginning Tuesday.

The poinsettias are 14-16 inches in red, white, pink or marble and cost $8 each or four for $30. A bow/foil costs an additional $2.

Frankfort seniors selling poinsettias

The Frankfort High School senior class is selling poinsettias through Monday.
Cost is $10. The colors are red, white-star, pink, marble and peppermint. Each plant comes in a foil wrapped 6-inch pot.

Delivery is Dec. 10. Call Jennifer at 320-3359 or Cheryl at 695-4560 to place an order.

Zoning board meets Tuesday

The Frankfort/Franklin County Board of Zoning Adjustments meets 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the council chamber at City Hall.
Agenda items include a request for a home to allow a photography studio in one bedroom, a request to reduce a side yard set back as part of construction and a request to allow a decrease in distance between advertising signs.

Pantry distribution set

Food distribution at Camp Pleasant Church’s Pleasant Pantry is every Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Except Dec. 24. The week of Dec. 21 food will be distributed Dec. 22. Distribution for the week of Dec. 28 is Dec. 29 because of the New Year’s holiday.

The Pleasant Pantry will also have a fundraiser, “A Night of Pleasantries” Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. The fundraiser will feature a love offering of $12.50 for one or $20 per couple for dinner, silent auction and live music.

Families who need food must bring a proof of residence. The church is located at 830 Shadrick Ferry Road.

Brent Sweger speaking at Green Drinks

Brent Sweger, transportation engineer, will be the speaker at this month’s Green Drinks gathering, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Kentucky Coffeetree Café, Broadway.

Sweger will speak about principles of sustainable city transportation, including land use, traffic codes and alternate transportation options. He will also discuss a few transportation initiatives taking place in Frankfort that residents can join. At the end of his talk, he will take questions from the group.

Green Drinks is a national and international social networking event that takes place in more than 500 cities monthly. It is an opportunity for people interested in sustainability (i.e. green) to casually get together over alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to meet each other and talk about their ideas and thoughts. Green Drinks is open to everyone. Check out http://www.greendrinks.org/ for more information.

Women’s network plans open house

The Network of Women in State Government will hold an open house from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday at the Woman’s Club Building, 200 Washington St. The meeting is open to all women.
Network members are preparing boxes to be donated to the Women’s Shelter during the holidays. Items needed include personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies, office supplies and personal items for women.

FFA alumni club starting

The Franklin County High School FFA is starting an FCHS FFA Alumni Club to help support programs associated with FFA.
Membership is open to anyone who is interested in supporting and promoting agricultural education and the FFA on the local, state and national level.

The club’s first meeting is 5 p.m. Thursday in the FCHS agriculture room, 509.

Young Democrats to elect officers

Franklin County Young Democrats meet Thursday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Completely Kentucky.
Agenda items include the Special Senate Election and a fundraiser for the governor’s ticket.

The organization will also hold elections for the executive offices of president, vice president, second vice president, secretary and treasurer.

Directly after the meeting the group will share social time at Capital Cellars.

Decorate cookies at Liberty Hall

Liberty Hall Historic Site invites families to bring their children to the Orlando Brown House Saturday for holiday fun inspired by the “Teddy Bear Treasures” exhibit. Children and adults will decorate sugar and gingerbread teddy bear-shaped cookies while sipping cocoa. A teddy bear story time will cap off the event. This event is recommended for children ages 3-7.

Tickets are $6 per person ($5 for Friends of Liberty Hall), and both the child and the adult need a ticket. Participation is limited to 20 people at 11 a.m. and 20 people at 2 p.m. To purchase a ticket come to the Liberty Hall Historic Site visitors center at the Orlando Brown House. The Orlando Brown House is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Sunset luminary event Dec. 13

The “Festival of Lights Luminary Event” at Sunset Memorial Gardens is Dec. 13 from 5-7 p.m. Families can reserve luminary candle bags by calling the cemetery office between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p. m. Monday through Friday until the close of business Dec. 10. Honorary luminaries can be picked up in advance at the office from Dec. 8-11 or on the day of the event from 4:30-5 p.m.

This year will feature the Highland Christian Church Choir from 5:30- 6 p.m. A reading of the names of lost loved ones will start at 5:15 p.m. All families interested in having their loved ones added to the list can call 695-3023.

Financial aid workshop Dec. 8

Franklin County High School is hosting a “Paying for College 101” financial aid workshop Dec. 8 at 6 p.m. in the media center.
Summer Gortney, Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority outreach coordinator will present the workshop for seniors and their parents.

Early Years collecting gloves, mittens

Early Years Orthodontics is collecting new gloves and mittens for Coats for Kids.
Donations can be dropped off at the practice’s 635 Comanche Trail location.
Call the office at 227-1931 prior to coming to make sure someone is available to accept the donation. Mittens and gloves will be collected through Dec. 17.
Those who donate will be eligible to win a new Sonicare toothbrush.

Scholarships available

The Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority will accept applications for Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarships from Dec. 1 through Feb. 1, 2010.

Students who will graduate from a Kentucky high school or earn a diploma through a home school program during the 2009-2010 academic year are eligible to apply. The scholarships are worth up to $1,500 a year for four years of college.
Qualified seniors can apply using Zip Access at www.kheaa.com.

An applicant must be recommended by the high school they attend to be considered, and high school officials will have until Feb. 15 to select the applicants they wish to submit for consideration.

The number of applicants a school may submit depends on the school’s total enrollment. Home schools may nominate one student. Kentucky high schools with an enrollment of 1,500 or more may nominate five applicants; 1,000 to 1,499 may nominate four applicants; 500 to 999 may nominate three applicants; and fewer than 500 may nominate two applicants.

The Byrd Scholarship is named for longtime U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia, who authored the legislation establishing the program in 1985. An independent panel will choose winners based on academics, community service, school involvement and school recommendation.

Frankfort Transit will be operating on limited service using the Saturday schedule, 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. route and 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. job access:
