Rebounding woes cost Flyers game

Franklin County’s defense was forcing Clay County into missed shots.

Problem was, the Flyers weren’t coming up with the rebounds.

The FCHS boys basketball team gave up 16 offensive rebounds to Clay County, and the Tigers came away with a 50-48 win Saturday night in the Battle of the Bluegrass at the Frankfort Convention Center.

“We really didn’t deserve to win,” FCHS coach Scott Chalk said. “We almost stole it, but we didn’t deserve to win.

“We gave up 16 offensive rebounds,” he added. “We gave up nine in the first half and seven in the second half, so we didn’t really do much better.”

Despite their problems on the glass, the Flyers stayed with Clay County until the final horn.

Lyndon McKee’s 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter gave FCHS a 13-12 lead.

A putback by Clay County’s Adam Gay opened the second quarter, and FCHS’ Vance Hall tied the game at 14-14 with a free throw.

A 3-pointer by Codi Roberts put the Tigers up 17-14 with 6:43 left in the second quarter, and they never trailed again.

Franklin County was held without a field goal in the second quarter, but the Flyers closed the period with six straight points on free throws to pull within three points, 24-21, at halftime.

Both teams scored 10 points in the third quarter, and Clay was ahead 34-31 going into the fourth quarter.

While the Tigers struggled from the foul line early in the fourth, Hall hit four straight baskets to pull Franklin County within a point at 40-39 with 3:40 remaining.

That was as close as the Flyers would get.

FCHS was trailing 50-46 after two free throws by the Tigers’ D.J. Wilson with 12 seconds left, but Bryce Burton went in for a layup that made the score 50-48 with five seconds remaining.

FCHS’ Ryan Timmons immediately fouled Wilson, who missed both foul shots. The Flyers got the rebound but lost the ball out of bounds while driving downcourt, and they weren’t able to come up with a steal on the inbounds pass.

According to Chalk, rebounding wasn’t the only problem the Flyers had.

“That was huge,” he said, “but we didn’t execute the things we wanted to do. We’d call timeout and set something up, and then we wouldn’t do it. They didn’t listen, and we won’t tolerate that. We made mistakes that hurt ourselves.

“We played hard, and I thought we played really hard in the second half and did some good things,” Chalk added, “but we didn’t execute and we didn’t block out.”

Hall led all scorers with 26 points.

Gay led Clay (2-0) with 16 points, and Wilson had 13.

“You can’t give someone 16 extra possessions and expect to win the game,” Chalk said, “but we almost stole it anyway.”

Franklin County’s next game is Tuesday at Jeffersontown.
